Trouble accessing refine brush in psp2020

I am using the tutorial for this.
I open an image (raster1) find ·smart selection brush·. However, the Refine Brush box stays blank. How do I overcome this, please?

I'm assuming you did this, but you didn't expressly say it so I have to ask. Did you make a selection first? Refine Brush only appears after a selection has been made.

Refine Brush will also not show up if you don't actually have any data selected. For example, if I create a blank new layer and select everything, Refine Brush won't activate because there is no data to refine to. Another example, i had a layer with some image data, when at least a corner of my selection was on the image data Refine Brush became active. However, if I selected any other area of the layer without image data, refine brush did not activate. Or if I changed the active layer and the my selection which had data on the first layer suddenly has no data on the second layer, the refine brush disables itself there as well.

No, I omitted to create a selection...but having done so since then, everything works well, thank you.
It is a very good tool. Far better than Topaz Remask 5 which I used before. With practice and patience I feel confident of getting perfect results.
