Compatibility with .AI and/or .EPS and/or SVG files

Post by aldobz »

I was testing compatibility with .AI vector files (Adobe Illustrator). I saw that there is the possibility to save in .AI format (but will it be a "true" vector?).
And, similarly, I tried to open an .AI file made with Adobe Illustrator. A "PostScript Rendering" window asks me a DPI value. Regardless of the value entered, the layer that appears in the layer palette is not a vector, but a background, and this is a bit disappointing.
I have read, also on this forum, that there are conversion utilities between the various formats, but I was hoping to be able to do without them.
Have any of you achieved more satisfying results?
Thanks in advance.

No PSP always converts to raster before saving in eps or .ai. the same with PSD. I think the only format for saving vectors that PSP supports is WMF or EMF.

Inkscape is open software, available free. I have been using Inkscape for all of my vector work since 2003, although with the recent changes to Firefox theming I have retired from using vectors to make icons. However, this year I tried manipulating an SVG file with Inkscape and it worked well. Just now I opened an SVG file in Inkscape with no problems. I even have a Windows extension that lets SVG files show up as thumbnails.

I had thought .ai files were SVG; they're not. Inkscape (when it tries to open them) sees them as PDF files, and you get the (for PDFs) appropriate dialog. I really would recommend re-saving your .ai files as .svg files through a dedicated SVG editor; so much easier. My Adobe Illustrator CS2 will open .ai files. Adobe Acrobat Reader opens them faster, but the save-as options are limited.

PSP is a raster editor that only opens first pages of .pdf documents. PSP 2018 opens my .ai files with a Postscript dialog, then renders the resultant image as raster, not vector. I hope this all helps.

Edit: PSP does a lousy job with SVG files. I use Affinity Photo. Inkscape also works and has the advantages that it is purpose-built for SVG and it is free.

While OT of the original question, actually PSP will open all pages of many .pdf files as was discussed in another thread some time ago (don't remember the exact thread at the moment). If I recall correctly, whether or not PSP will only open the first page or all pages seems to depend on the program that was used to create the .pdf file and/or perhaps the save options used. I have found that files created with Adobe Acrobat all seemed to open all pages in PSP.
