This might not be the answer you are looking for, but if you are going to do this multiple times I would suggest getting VideoStudio, or an equivalent, and a capture card and create DVDs. VS gives you the ability to create NTSC or PAL DVDs using the same source material. Here is a link to thread talking about what you will run into creating a PAL disc. PAL in South Africa

Good Luck.

And if you want the least hassle, NTSC DVDs are playable in Oz.

The real question is how to capture the NTSC VHS tape into a computer in the first place. IMHO, the easiest way of doing it is via a Canopus ADVC-110 and an IEEE-1394 card. You can then "capture" the DV stream using VS9 or whatever, as suggested, in the form of a DV type 1 AVI file, which you can edit, if you wish. When you are ready, make the NTSC DVD, put it in an envelope and a few days later it can be seen on t'other side of the world.

It IS possible to convert a tape from NTSC to PAL but the quality will be atrocious and it will cost you far more than the foregoing.

And if they don't already have one, DVD players that play both formats cost next to nothing nowadays, less than 100 bucks in PAL land.

How to convert NTSC to PAL

Post by missnz »

Hello I know a way, you can send a DVD which will play in Australia. I can tell you how to convert the NTSC file into a DVD or put it this way. The one I made worked, but I used I use a different program to make her DVD. Not lead the age studio, but from what I have seen is no problem as far as doing the project. If you contact me. I will send you the full details in private.

But here is the idea. You go to video studio load the file you want to send to the person in Australia into the timeline then you go to project PAL file being you should be able to tell the DVD to write it as that format. As I see it. I have not used video studio to write the DVD I have used a different program to write the DVD. I hope this helps if you want any more information, please send a private message.

NTSC video to PAL DVD

My suggestion would be to buy the Belkin DVD creator kit which gives you a USB 2.0 cable with a S-video/composite connection and audio input for your computer. It also comes with VideoStudio 6.0 which will allow you to capture your NTSC tape and output a PAL DVD.

You will need a computer with USB 2.0 and a DVD burner in order to do this.
