New PSP X9 User Question - Page Orientation

Post by artgal »

I've used PaintShop Pro as long as I can remember ..all the way back to Jasc's original version in the early 90's and love it. I'm finally letting loose and and giving PSP X9 a trial run. I'm still trying to get used to the new interface. Coming from X6, for some reason I find X9 a more difficult leap.

In previous versions I was able to add the simple little portrait/landscape icon onto my top tool bar below the menu toolbar. That way, if I'd opened a new file in standard 8.5" x 11" (portrait) and later wanted to switch it to 11" x 8.5" (landscape) I simply clicked the icon. I've looked extensively for how to do this in the trial version of X9. Now, if I open a file in 8.5" x 11" (portrait) (File > New > Blank Canvas = Paper > US Legal > Image Dimensions = 8.5"w x 11"h > Unit = Inches), I've created a new file in portrait orientation.
My Questions:
1. If, after working on the file, I decide I want to change the page orientation to landscape, what exactly do I do?
2. If I want to customize a toolbar, can I add the portrait/landscape icon? If so, how?

I've seen instructions on switching from portrait to landscape in the crop section as well as in the printer setup, neither of which I think are appropriate.
It's also not Image > Rotate or Image > Resize.
I can make the change manually in Image > Canvas Size > Manually type in dimensions but that seems a bit cumbersome compared to clicking an icon.
Also, I can't figure out how to customize my top toolbar (under the menu) with icons of all the tools, effects, etc I use most often.

Apologies for what is obviously very simple questions but it's honestly got me perplexed.
TIA for any help.

You can locate the command by going to Menu > Image > Rotate
.
If you want icons (like you, I always do this) go to Menu > Customize. Click on the Commands tab, then select the Image item. Drag the specic commands to the main toolbar. I the default does not please you, right-click for more options.

Edit: Looking again at your OP, maybe you want something else. The Crop tool has a '''turn the crop at right angle" sub-tool. If you want the thumbnail to display turned, Windows has an option for that. Finally, in Print there are options for printing in Landscape/Portrait modes.

I did a quick look at PSPx6 and can confirm your observation. Nothing in PSP 9 either. But in PSP 7 there is a single rotate button. I remember that button. I used it for years. Today, you will find the function shared among three buttons:

To get those buttons, follow the directions I posted earlier.

ehume - Thanks for your post.

I'm probably not explaining well enough.
I want to only change the page orientation. In the example, I created a right-pointing arrow. If I do as you suggest: Menu > Image > Rotate, I'm only not only rotating the page but the arrow rotates as well. I don't want the contents of the page to rotate, just the page (from portrait to landscape).
See the example posted below.

Creating a customized toolbar: I'm not sure if there are limitations to the X9 trial version but I can't find "Menu > Customize > Commands Tab" Although this is exactly where it would be. I did find Menu > View > Customize (see photo) but there's no Commands tab. Any other place it could be?
customize.jpg
Also I might mention I recently had a system crash, had to reinstall everything, which, in part, led to downloading X9 trial. Still some bugs with the Windows reinstall meaning I can't get it to install as 64 bit (my system is 64-bit capable) so I'm running it as 32-bit for the time being. Can that be causing a limitation with X9?

Thanks Much

hartpaul - I'm trying to remember exactly where I got the portrait/landscape icons, it was part of my desktop for so long. But it came from where you could customize the commands. There was a long list of commands, itemized by category, and you could just drag/drop your favs onto the top toolbar, alongside the other default icons under the Menu bar. I can't find anything close on X9, although I can't believe they'd leave that out so I must not be looking in the right place.

I am not sure you can rotate the CANVAS without rotating the content.
However, you can change the orientation in the New File command:
Change Orientation.jpg
If you want to change the orientation of a canvas once you have content on it, you could use the Canvas size and manually switch the values.

Here is the Customize window in my copy of PSPx9:

PSPx9 is before the Essentials workspace went into effect. I have no explanation for the difference.

OP: could you start up PSPx6 (it will do so separately from PSPx9)? Then do a screenshot. I'm an old Windows user, so I do shift-PrntScrn, paste as a new image into PSP then use the Crop tool to isolate what I want. In this case, could you post a screenshot of your "Portrait/Landscape button?"

Cassel -
I realize I can make adjustments in the New File options but I'm trying to make the changes after a file has been worked on and I'm trying to do it with a simple click of a portrait/landscape icon that'll change the page orientation but not the contents. Just a way to save some cumbersome steps. The only way I can find to accomplish portrait to landscape without changing orientation of elements already in the file is to:
A. Copy all elements
B. Menu > New File > switch orientation to landscape..
C. Paste contents of clipboard into New File
D. Repeat for each layer
Not exactly what I want to do :)

Using the Canvas Size would accomplish it but again, I'm trying to avoid all the typing. And there's no "transpose" to click on the dimensions.

ehume - I have no idea why I can't get all the tabs that are in your screenshot, but I think that's exactly what I need. I'll contact Corel to see if the trial version withholds customizing toolbars. I guess it's possible. Unfortunately I no longer have PSPX6 to install.

JoeB - Tried that and the file is still saved as portrait :(

OK. You no longer have PSPx6 to install. Do you have any earlier PSP to install? For example, I have PSP 7, 9, XI, x4, x6, x7 x8 and 2018 on disk, and x9 media saved to disk. I keep them all, because you never know when you'll need to reinstall them. I regret not keeping PSP 3 and 5 media.

Perhaps this is the one you were using:

This has a one-button travel to Page Setup. And that does have a selection of Portrait vs Landscape.

Edit: Perhaps the toolbar icon was this (from PSPx6):
