After 16 years I upgraded from mini DV to a Panasonic Full HD camera. I've been using Corel VS (currently X9.) for editing and making DVD from SD footage for 12 years. Now I face several questions which might be simple for experienced HD users, but not to a newcomer in HD footage:
1. What recording format do you recommend to set on the camera considering further editing and movie making under VS? AVCHD 50p or AVCHD 50i or MP4? The manual of the camera suggests MP4 for editing on computers, but AVCHD has slightly better quality? Which format is the best for editing under Corel VS?
2. After completing a project what format is recommended to make the movie in Mp4, or AVC/H.264 for viewing on a HD TV set? What format is available to make a menu similar to a DVD? Does it make sense to burn any format to a disc?? And what format do you recommend to keep the movie on a portable HDD primarily for viewing it on TV?
Thanks for your advice

To your questions.
In the VS settings activate the setup where the VS automatically adjust the system to the first file on the timeline. If you put there a file from your HD camera it will be set to 1920x1080. (Right upper corner).
You should always start with the highest format, or you can make your few sec long intro section and always start your videos with this file. AVCHD is a bit better quality but most monitor will not play it. The general standard today for HD video is MP4 (H264), in some modern TVs you can also use H265. VS will edit almost all formats - see some exceptions in this forum.
For rendering you can use all formats AVCHD is recently the best what VS offers.
For the menus on DVD you need a lower format MPEG-2 720x576. Your system does not support BR disc for HD recording. You shall update the VS.

Re: Use of HD footage under Corel VS (Shift from SD to HD)
Hi
As you have updated the camcorder to record HD are you intending to burn a bluray disc
You will need a Bluray burner installed to the pc
Purchase the Bluray burner plugin from Corel
And purchase a Bluray disc Player connected to TV
Or are you intending to stay with DVD standard definition discs.
You mention playing the files on smart TV, in which case you may never have to burn a disc again.
You should run a few tests rendering a short video to different formats to see which your TV can play.
Ok
If you are intending to burn a Bluray disc then use AVCHD 50i for your recordings.
You say -- Does it make sense to burn any format to a disc??—yes Mpeg2 has to be used when burning a DVD.
If you are burning a DVD standard definition then either AVCHD 50i or 50P recording would be ok but would need down scaling to Mpeg2 720 x 576 to burn the disc.
To play the video on tv via usb stick record to AVCHD 50P or MP4
There is also an option to screencast (mirroring) from PC to TV (wifi required)
Audio. Please note…Video Studio 2019
Corel have dropped Digital Dolby surround support only Digital Dolby stereo is available. (Windows 10)
