DVD video freez up

Post by bpvideo »

OK I guess I will break the ice in the new forums.

I am experiencing a problem with burnt dvd's. Theses are HIgh School soccer games about 90 minutes in total length.

The DVD's load fine and the video quality is fine, but I am having a problem with the DVD's freezing. Once they freeze you cannot get past the point at all.

I am using Memorex DVD+R 8X Media.

Outputting to the following format

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
AC3 audio 128 kbit/s

There is a root menu but only 2 chapters with background image and music on menu only.

Should I lower my bit rate perhaps? Any suggestions to overcome this freeze up problem.

I had created some corrupt mpeg2 files once when recording using the
ATI video recorder. Although the files were marked as "Dvd Compliant"
and the dvd creation software didn't re-render the video I had very similar problems.
An indication that the file was corrupt was when I loaded the mpeg2 file into ulead products and used the chaptering method I couldn't seek throughout the mpeg2 file quickly. The program was very sluggish and
couldn't always seek to the absolute end of the mpeg2 file.
After installing new drivers & directx the ATI software started recording good mpeg2 files. So if you load the video into an editor and have a hard time seeking to the absolute end and then back to the beginning could be same problem as I had.

In my opinion the bit_rate of your video should be no problem.
Audio bit-rate is alitte low for dolby, usually 256kbs.

I don't use Memorex, never will. Why, same problem your having.
Usually though, if the media is a problem I'll get a "C13" error from
the dvd player.

What speed are you burning at?
I have discovered that with my 12x burner if I go above 4x then no matter what brand of disk I am using, some of the DVD players in our house refuse to play the disc yet some will play that same disc.

It seems that some DVD players need a stronger image than others, the faster writing speeds appear to create a weaker image.

Try lowering your burning speed, it might fix the problem.

bpvideo - I'm having similar problems with my DVD's freezing on me. Not sure why, but if you get around to testing the speed of burning (suggested by another member) would you let me know. Another question, do you put after market labels on your DVD's? I thought I heard or read somewhere that DVD's will not view properly if a label is placed on it. Do you know anything about labels and DVD playback?

Thanks for the replies,

I learned very early to use lower write speeds I also never burn above 4x to reduce "bad burns". I think I will try a different media. I once before found a matix of Failure results for differnt DVD media online, anyone happen to know where something simular online.

Also any suggestions onDVD laser printable +R media?

Thanks to all

Freezing DVD's

Post by oleg »

I have identical problem with freezing DVD's. And a brand new computer with virtually the same characteristics as yours plus LightScribe burner.
Did you have a solution to this problem ? I would appreciate seeing it too.
Thanks.

Using a different Media type seemed to fix this problem, I am now using verbatim -R or other brand from a local source. The link that THoff posted is a very helpful tool as well.
