How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
I am wondering if there is a way to render MPEG4 29.971 fps video clips to 25 (or 50) fps and retain smooth motion.
I have tried a few times and end up with a much larger file and it is not smooth like the original.
Thanks

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
That is not an easy task. The render device must remove every 1.20th frame. It is normally not possible. The professional frame convertors buffer 1 second (or more) video in bitmap format and read them out with different frame rate. Ie they buffer 1 second of motion with 29,971 frames and read them out by 25 frames/sec. To make a motion smoother the very sophisticated ones will recalculate the motion between the frames. For that reason the high end equipment saves the video in extreme high speed (100-1000 fps) and create a new stream for any other read out speed.
Fortunately most of today monitors will play both speeds, ie for our purposes there is no conversion required.

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
Why do you want to do that, John. A 29.97 fps video will still play perfectly well even if your TV uses PAL settings...

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
Good question Ken,
Yes I realise that my flat panel will play them perfect BUT I have some royalty free video clips (29.971fps) I wanted to include in my project which contains mostly my (PAL) .mts video clips.
It seems I can't (thanks Weaver for the explanation) unless I want jerky motion when those clips are displayed.

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
My own experience is that if the 29.97 video contains fast moving action, it will show as jerky if mixed with (and produced as) 25 fps. But if there is no fast motion, you may not notice it if it is reduced to 25 fps. All I can suggest is that you try producing a small amount of it at 25 fps and see if you can accept it. In my own experiments, I could not notice any difference at all, but the 29.97 fps video contained relatively static movement...

If they are just short clips your best option is to strip them into frames and rebuild them as pal, this will run them a bit slow at ~83%jparnold wrote:Good question Ken,

Thanks for your replies.
Asik1's is a good solution but what is the best/easiest method for stripping into frames and rebuilding as pal as a slightly slower motion would not be an issue?
Thanks

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
Thanks for that info
I rarely use Gspot (or any other similar app) but I have been using Irfanview on and off for years. I will get Mediainfo and deep 6 Gspot.
I assume that VirtualDub is for stripping a clip into frames? Actually if I remember correctly many years ago (well since Videostudio X4) I seem to recollect pulling a clip into frames. That was pre retiring (my brain).

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
John how long is the video file, are you bothered about the audio, that is if the video has sound
Use a free program called "video to jpeg converter"
https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/d ... verter.htm
Set project properties to your output settings
Then add images to Video Studio timeline,
Right click timeline for Insert photo for timelapse strobe
Render to Same as project settings

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps
Thanks Trevor
I did go searching for video to jpeg converters but the two I tried only allowed conversion for every 10th frame.
I will download from the link you advised.
Thanks

I'm sorry to face Trevor but I will not advise a single/limited features app but one that can do much more and do not need installation. hence http://www.virtualdub.org/

Re: How to work with video clips at 29.971 fps

I tried that program. Firstly when I tried to OPEN FILE it defaults to (types of files) 'all types' (avi, divx, mpeg etc) but does NOT include (type) MP4 (and so my MP4 file are not listed for selection) and when I changed the 'types of files' to 'All Types (*.*)' it then lists my MP4 files but if I try and select one I get -
(filename) is of an unknown or unsupported file type
So as far as I am concerned it is of no value to me.
I did get video to jpeg converter to work (appears to have created jpeg files for each frame. Problem though is how do I EASILY add all those jpeg files (there are 338) to a timeline to render.
