Canuck is right. You should not be thinking in terms of a standard length of video fitting onto a single layer disc. Rather, you need to be flexible enough to accept that what you think of as a two hour limit is only possible if you reduce the bitrate of your project, and by doing so, also reduce the final quality. A single layer disc notionally can only hold 4.7 GB of video (and in reality 4.3 GB). That is what it will hold -- size not hours. At the best quality setting a bitrate of 8000 kbps will be used -- and that is what I imagine your project is using. But at 8000 kbps, only 1 hour of video will fit on a single layer disc. Your project is 90 minutes, and to get that properly on a single layer disc, whether you like it or not, the bitrate has to be reduced to 6000 kbps.

By way of a footnote, your two hour limit would require a bitrate of 4000 kbps, but the final quality of that would be no better than a VHS video tape. At 6000 kbps, the final quality should still be good.

a standard 4.7GB DVD can only hold about 60 minutes at the best quality settings. To get 2 hours on the same DVD the bit rate has to be reduced with a large reduction of quality. If you want to keep the best quality then you have to use a DL DVD or split the video over 2 standard DVDs. If you let the program automatically decide to "fit to disc" then you often get a faulty DVD. I have experienced this with other video programs. This so called "nuisance of Corel Video Studio" is common to all video programs.

BTW, have you tried other DVDs on your player or have you tried to play the problem DVD on a friends player? If other DVDs play on your player then there is nothing wrong with your player. Similarly, if they don't play on your frinds player, again nothing wrong with your players. The problem is with your project setup.

Stand-alone DVD players behave much different then your computer writer/player which are much more forgiving.

Do not forget, that each menu point and setting requires also some capacity, ie the 60 Min in maximum quality (8000 kbps) can be reached when there is no big or complex menu) As I remember on those fuzzy pictures, there was something like
5.5 GB and (6.05 GB). The data in brackets shows the total data volume. This must be reduced to under 4,7 GB on the DVD. It will fit the standard disk only when 6000 kbps is selected (will be 4.5 GB). Good luck!

Good Morning All, Update!

As soon as I made the changes that Ken & Canuck suggested
by way of bit rate everything was fine. I must confess
my ignorance that falls into the “i never did that before”
category. I also never paid much attention to the colored
guide at the bottom of the screen……………..maybe if I had
I would not have created so many beer pads!

My thanks to all who have contributed to this particular thread
as I am sure it will help others. Rest assured all on these suggestions
are now part of my notebook for future reference. I mentioned before
that I did not like changing default settings within the program but it
now appears that if I am expecting the program to do or make
changes automatically for me, I better be prepared to wait a
long time~!

Thank you again one and all, I’ve learned plenty!!!!

Ken Berry wrote:I am assuming that he may not have ticked the Create Menu box on the first page of the Burning module. As canuck has suggested, those chapter markers are only useful if you are creating a menu and sub-menu (Chapters). I get the feeling from what bill in pa is saying that he did not go through this process but believed instead that the chapter markers would do something automatically...
Ken,

I'd appreciate your insight on this question:

So, if you don't follow the create menu process, the chapter markers you add before rendering won't allow skipping sections of the video (Say..scene to Scene)?

Thank You

Yes, that's my understanding. The chapter points only work if they are part of building a menu. As far as I am aware, if there is no menu/sub-menu, the chapter points do not otherwise get included in the rendered DVD...
