save as wonkiness

Post by fndooley »

Using Pro 2018...just started acting kind of wonky during the "save as" step. If I go to change the save as from TIF to JPG or vice-versa the file name completely changes to some random file name in the folder and not the pic I am working on. Anybody else had this phenomenon?

It doesn't do that on my PSP 2018.
Could precise your steps so I can reproduce the defect ?

Didn't use to do it on mine either. Something new. So lets say you have finished all your edits, I hit save, or save as, and save the image as a TIFF file. Now I go back to the exact same image and add a visible watermark (for example) and want to save it as a JPG file. When I hit "save as" it defaults to the previous file name and version, and when I change the file type from TIFF to JPG the file name automatically changes to some other random file name. May jump to the last saved JPG file or something, not sure. Hope that helps.

Not having that problem here either on Windows 10. I note you have Windows 7.
For me PSP defaults to the last saved name and file type. S0:
1. I load a file farm003.jpg
2. Make edits (levels, Red/Green/Blue)
3. Save As - the name will be farm003 but the file type and suggested file extension will be the same as what I saved last.
eg if I saved my previous file as cloud.png then I will see farm003.png as the suggested name and the Save as Type will be PNG
So I save it as farm003.tif. The name on that image title bar will now show as farm003.tif as well.
4. I now make another edit to that image (Saturation) and again do a Save As . PSP will suggest farm003.tif (the same as the last file save). I save it as farm003.bmp. The name on the title bar of that image will now change to farm003.bmp.
5. Now I make another edit (highlight/midtone/shadow) and again Save As . The suggested name will be farm.bmp.

All of this is normal behaviour and I am not getting any random file names as you are suggesting.
Can you try these steps and report back

I guess you could also try resetting PSP by holding down the Shift key when clicking on the desktop PSP icon. You will be asked if you want to reset. Make sure you save any customizations (e.g. of the workspace) before you do this as otherwise they will be lost.

hartpaul, will try it the way you described. the key difference in what you are doing, and what I was doing, but achieve same result, but I change the file type first without changing file name. no big deal, being a 'save' function just trying to do it as quick as possible, but now I have to take my time because at times it saves it as something already in my system and I fear I will overwrite something I don't want to loose. will give your protocol a go and report back. thanks. p.s. - need to update my data, system is windows 10 now.

ken,
resets always scare me. have you done it before? I don't have any presets - but I have installed the nik collection plug-in. will it blow that away?

It won't wipe out Nik -- although it will probably break the link with it. But that is corrected in Preferences where you just go back to File Locations > Plugins and enter Nik there again (C:\Program Files\Google\Nik Collection or wherever you have Nik installed).

And yes, I have done it a few times before in various versions -- as have quite a few others here.

Will give it a go Ken, I know they are charging for Nik now and don't want to loose this great set of plug-in's. I have tried computer restarts, with no issues. If I type out the full file name, it is okay, but if I leave the filename in and change the file type, it is still changing to a random file. Will report back and thanks to all.

I would suggest that there is hierarchy of things to do when you have a problem and I would suggest the following :

You have a problem perhaps with one tool or in starting. Each higher numbered step makes more changes to your system.
1. Restart your computer
2. Turn your computer off for 30 seconds and then start it again.
3. Most tools have a reset to default which is found in the Presets dialog box (note not everything is set to default eg if you have turned on a texture that is not reset to off)
4. File > Preferences > Reset Preferences which allows you to decide what preferences and also to delete all cache files.
5. Hold shift key down while starting PSP to reset everything to factory settings.
6. Uninstall, clean up and reinstall.

Perhaps others may suggest other steps that could be included in this sequence.

thanks hartpaul, looks like I do these in sequence for the most and see if any correct... steps 1-3 all happen at the same time. I get that. the uninstall, clean up and reinstall. can you go through that in a little more detail please? I bought and uploaded the software probably two years ago. I don't have a disc for it, was an electronic install. how the heck do I go about reinstalling if I do not have a disc?

Sounds like you have committed the number 1 cardinal sin of computerese - always have a backup.
Rule number 2 is similar - have a backup independent of the main computer.

I think you mean downloaded in the statement "I bought and uploaded the software probably two years ago"
If you are talking about PSP 2018 then it would be just short of two years ago and possibly withing the time period if you took out the 2 year download insurance available for a little extra.
When you download software you should also make an additional copy of the installation files - I have at least two on different computers or hard drives or USB sticks so in the case of a crash of the main computer you can always reinstall the programs on the new or repaired computer.
If you did take out the insurance you should be able to enquire from Corel at

https://www.corel.com/en/support/

or Cleverbridge (which redirects to a Corel page) make sure you have your Serial number noted down somewhere as well. I put mine in a Wordpad rtf document so that it is easilt available and copyable.

for a new link for downloads or search your emails and see if you can find the original email with the links and see if they work. You do keep your order emails don't you or at least a PDF copy so you havthe order information?

But make sure you have tried steps 1 to 5 first - the uninstall and reinstal is only the last resort if nothing else works.

Hartpaul, will reply to this message later, but if I go up one, as I was going through your steps I got to the File>preferences>reset preferences, and when I selected this I got an error message that stated "no active document was selected" - Any thoughts on what I did wrong? I did everything else short of holding down the shift key while starting to see if the other steps helped. It seems like resetting the preferences part did do something, because it asked me a lot of questions while editing and saving my first image like it was the first time I used the program again. I made a few edits, saved as a TIF. Knew the file name - no problem. Went back in, added a visible watermark, did a 'save as' and changed file type to jpg, and boom. Did the same thing as before. Reset file name to some random file name/number. After I work in the program a little more I will restart and try the holding down the shift key. Thanks for the support.

Hartpaul, first time every I bought a program and it was just a download option. you are talking with an old guy, usually waiting for the cd's to arrive. I still have the original order email. tried the link, but it says it is not valid anymore. sent cleverbridge a note asking them what to do. I am not even sure I know how to make an additional copy of the installation files as you suggest. I hit the download link, and then clicked okay a few times and there it was.

Just a tip -- on all future PSP purchases, keep copies of the distribution files. I'm old enough that I expect technology to fail (I could tell you tales about seeing cars on the side of the road). But Perfectly Clear 3SE loses its link to PSP 2018 periodically, and having the distribution files makes the work-around quick and easy.

You can also save a Workspace.

You can uninstall PSP, restart (I learned that tip here) the reinstall.

I have done Save As with JPG --> PNG on Win 7-64 and Wini 10-64. PSP has always worked, so the trouble you have is not the OS.

I think in summary that others say you have a bum installation that you need to reset. I agree. Further, they have reassured you Resetting is OK. I think if you first save your workspace as a named (or named and numbered) workspace you should be able to retrieve it. I use the uninstall/reinstall method, but I am old and suspicious of newfangled things (like computers). But just in case resetting doesn't work, you still have a plan Z.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.
