Mixing video with different fps

Post by jparnold »

I have two video sources the main one I use is 1080p at 50fps but recently I purchased an 'action camera' which I have set to create video files at 1080p 60fps.
I am wondering if it is better to render video taken at 1080p 60 fps to something which is 1080p at 50 fps and then inserting that video into my main project containing video at 1080p at 50fps OR is VS smart enough to work all this out (mixture of 50fps and 60fps in the same project) during rendering?
I just noticed that the action camera can be set to 4K at 25fps. should I use that setting (but then I would have a mixture of 1080P at 50fps and 4K at 25fps.

Hi John
You are probably best to use 25fps, that way when you mix 50P with 25P, Video Studio will duplicate each frame use 50P, I assume they are all progressive,
If you mix 50P and 60P then render to 50P 10 frames will be dropped / deleted from the 60P, one frame in 6 which I think will be noticeable especially when panning the video.
and If you render 50P to 60P 10 frames will be added

Mixing 1080P at 50fps and 4K at 25fps. Is the better option as no frames will be removed just duplicated, and you will not notice that.

Thanks Trevor,
I was thinking that 4K at 25fps would be the best way to go.
It was the first time I had used the new action camera (Eken H6s and gives great results, color and sharpness and 25% the cost of a GoPro).
Sure there is distortion around th edges due to the extreme wide angled lense but probably most brands would also have that. Pity there is no tool in VS to fix this like there is in PaintShop Pro (perspective correction tool) or is there? (added later) Aha there is but in VS2018 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFpXn6RGTQQ
Thankfully most of not everything I videoed was with minimal camera movement.
