Wind Noise

Post by mwsing »

I have tried many of the audio filters to try and eliminate wind noise from my original clips, but none have been successful. Does anyone know a way to do this please?

Not much you can do,
you better prepare next time with a fur on your mikes.

Thanks - that's what I thought. But I am only using the built-in mike on my Cannon Legria video camera!

Most wind filters in camcorders don't seem to work very well, or even at all. Even a slight breeze on the microphones, barely felt, is enough to create horrible wind noise. For example, try blowing gently across the top of a narrow-neck water bottle with the cap removed.

A number of us have crafted our own. First of all, you need to remove any moving air that creates thenoise from around the microphone itself, except the audio you want to record. Asik mentioned fur. I use expanded foam of the sort used in dust filters for air conditioners or vacuum cleaners, attached to my Panasonic V770 camera using sticky-back velcro. See these images:
V770 camcorder with wind filter 3.jpg
which is a shot of the filter material with plastic U-channel on either side, and where the velcro is on either side of the camera microphones; and
V770 camcorder with wind filter.JPG
camera with filter attached.
tested one windy day around tall very leafy trees, and got results well beyond expectation.
Part of the problem is that unless you have the wind filter attached all the time, by the time you've fumbled around getting it from a camera bag and attaching it, the shot has often passed you by. So I found a way to attached it and leave it attached, even when the camera was in the bag.

I have an external Panasonic mike connected to my camcorder and it has a look alike 'dead cat' covering the built in foam cover on the mike and I still get wind noise although it certainly is less and of course the strength of the wind has an effect.
What I do during editing (if there are no other recorded sounds such as voice etc which I want included) is to mute the affected video clips and add sound effects (eg sound of the ocean, sound of traffic, even recorded sound of wind which sounds better than the noise recorded by the camera's mike). Another stop gap method is to tie a handkerchief around the camera covering the mesh where the inbuilt mike is located. I have even used my hand to cover it but make sure you don't move you hand while recording.

I have fitted my Sanyo HD1010 with an external Hama mike, to which I have fitted a "dead cat" wind cover and I find it very effective
