MSP 7 and Video Filter Issues

Post by j_bbrown »

Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to the video editing process and I am having some issues with video filters.

I put my video footage in to the timeline and then I right click to add video filters. I am using the brightness and contrasts filter. I select the setting I like and then I preview the footage and notice that the video get brighter and brighter. Then I go and test the build of video and then preview the video in WMP and it also show the brighten video.

Am I doing some thing wrong with the settings?

The problem is that by default, the video filters have two keys, not just the initial key. "Keys" are what controls the filter (i.e. the brightness and the contrast values), and are represented by little diamonds on the slider in the left pane of the Filter Options window.

Note that there's one at the beginning and one at the end. When you click on the diamonds, you'll see the settings for that key. If you modify the settings on the beginning key, it doesn't change the ending key. You have to either modify the ending key manually by clicking on it and changing the values, or select the beginning key, right-click COPY it, select the end key, and right-click PASTE it onto the ending key.

I'm hoping MSP 8 changes this behavior, and allows single-key filters, motion paths, etc. Unless I explicitly create an ending key, my expectation is that the settings on the initial key will propogate throughout the clip. For MSP 7, it's just something you have to get used to.

By right-clicking on a key in Effects Manager in MSP8, you can copy the setting to all keys, all keys to the right or all keys to the left (still subject to change). This is more versatile than a single key filter.

I would like to see single-key filters, motion graphs, etc. in MSP. Versatility is fine, but really shouldn't be mandatory. MSP9 maybe?

Very, very regularly, I want to brighten, sharpen, color-correct, zoom, pan or otherwise effect an entire clip. Being required to cut-n-paste keys to do so is non-intuitive and more than a little frustrating, IMO.

I don't know how often I've cut-n-pasted to achieve single-key filters. Many, many times. It's especially frustating when I'm narrowing in on a final set of manipulations for a clip using a variety of filters (say B&C, color correction and sharpness), and repeatedly have to modify the initial key, then right-click COPY, select the end key, right-click PASTE over and over again.

Of course, the MOST frustating thing is when I forget to copy the initial key to the ending key, spend however long rendering the results only to find I've got a transitional effect when I didn't want one.

Perhaps I explained badly. They are not cut'n'paste: they automatically copy the attributes to right, to left or to all in a single click. This is much more useful than a single key system. Download the MSP8 public beta and try it. You'll be convinced.
