old problem, new user
G'day folks,
I'm having major audio sync problems using VS8 SE. Reading through the forum it seems this is a common problem, but I haven't found a thread which offers a viable solution.
I've followed the recommended procedure and tried a bunch of variations with a variety of files, with no success. I've even authored a DVD with Power Producer 2 Gold using the same files, and it worked fine (aside from inherent aspect ratio issues in PP2), so I'm stumped.
I have downloaded all the updates, but the first and fourth ones could not find VS8 on my computer, even though the others worked fine. I only got VS8 recently as part of a bundle so I'm not too keen to fork out for VS9 unless there is no other way out.
Here's my system specs and an example of a file (created by VS) that works fine in PP but not in VS. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P4, 2.02ghz, 512mb, 80gb HD + external USB 2.0 250gb HD, running Windows XP
VIDEO:
MPEG2 Video (PAL)
Upper Field First
24 bits, 750x576, 16:9
Variable (15000max)
AUDIO:
MPEG Ausio Layer 2
48000hz, 16 bit Stereo,
256kbps
cheers for reading,
NoM.O.

Hi
If the out of sync’ is noticeable directly after capture then I would suspect your capturing process.
USB is not the best to use for video.
At what point do you first notice the out of sync’ audio?
What capture device are you using? (usb is not good)
I assume you are capturing from an analogue source,
Digital is much better via a Firewire cable.
Are you using the drop frame counter for VS 8?
If its only noticeable after burning the dvd then you should overcome the problem by:-
1 / Installing VS 8 without the update patch.
or
2 / When creating a video file NEVER use smart render.
Your video properties show:-
VIDEO:
MPEG2 Video (PAL)
Upper Field First (for analogue capture)
24 bits, 750x576, 16:9
Variable (15000max) (This is very high 8000kbps is suitable for 1 hour of video.)
AUDIO:
MPEG Ausio Layer 2
48000hz, 16 bit Stereo,
256kbps
All the Best

These are the properties for one video file that I created with VS8 as part of the "recommended procedure". I posted this one as an example because I know this file works because it is one of the ones that I burnt using Power Producer. The 15000 max variable rate was created by VS8. Is there a way to control this in VS8?trevor andrew wrote:Hi

Hi,
I'm using a Dvico Fusion HDTV USB2.O to capture the video, it captures digital directly to MPEG and then provides VS8 as the authoring tool. There are no sync or quality problems with the files after capture. The files play fine in every media player I've tried, and like I said, I've even burnt them using Power Producer 2 Gold. So there is no problem with any of the files until they are authored using VS8.
Are you using the drop frame counter for VS 8?
Not unless it kicks in by iself. Should i be? If so, at what point?
Thanks for the response and apologies for rambling on.

Yeah, cheers, I figured that's where I would probably end up but I only just bought this thing, so it seems a bit much to have to upgrade in order for the product to be useful. I mean surely Ulead can't just say "no version 8 doesn't work, you need to buy version 9"?Black Lab wrote:IMHO, I would save myself the frustration of trying to figure out the VS8 OOS problem and simply spend the (relatively) few bucks and upgrade to VS9. It has many new enhancements and the OOS problem seems to have been solved.
Try-out the trial version of VS9 before buying.
1- This problem can be caused by corrupted MPEG files.
2- The corrupted file may play OK, but will cause sync problems later when the file is re-coded or re-multiplexed for the DVD!
3- MPEG files are not meant to be edited. Simply editing them with VS8 can cause corruption. (I don't know about VS9.) If you get the same problems with VS9, you may need a special purpose MPEG editor such as Womble MPEG Video Wizard ($120).

Thanks for that, I will see what the trial version's like.DVDDoug wrote:Try-out the trial version of VS9 before buying.![]()

1- The MPEG Files aren't corrupted in any way.
2- If they were corrupted, I would imagine using Power Producer would yield similar results, but the DVD I authored with PP is FLAWLESS except for the fact that PP doesn't allow you to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio.
3-The files haven't been edited and were created by VS8 as mentioned already. How can VS8 produce a file that will burn perfectly in other applications, but will not burn them properly itself?
In the end it seems fair to label this program as a piece of crap, and a time consuming one at that.
P.S Apologies for the double post, I don't know how that happened.

Hi
The Bit rate of 15000 kbps is still confusing.
Are you sure its not 1500.
When I go to --- capture --- format dvd ---options---video and audio property settings --- advanced --- I can change the bit rate, but only between 1777 and 8264.
If you have managed to capture to 15000 then ????????????????????????????
Dropped Frames.
During capture if the pc cannot keep up to encoding in real time, or you have a bad signal then dropped frames may occur.
Drop Frame Counter
Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Video Studio 8
Open UVS.INI
[Information]
Change:-
Show Drop Frame from =0 to =1 Save the changes.
The drop frame counter can be viewed during capture in the information panel.
Any drop frame is bad, none is good.
Place your captured file in the timeline, right click select properties.
What are they???

The data rate may well be the problem, but if so, I still can't see why Power Producer, a cheap little program, does not suffer the same shortfalls as Video Studio.
I'll check out this drop frame counter stuff, but I have very little doubt that the problem is with this piece of crap of a program not the files - like i said this just an example, I have tried with plenty of different files from a range of different sources, and they all come out the same.
cheers, NoM.O.

Some of the properties you give are completely whacky! I suspect somehow or other you are getting read-outs which are two or three decimal points out. The duration you give amounts to 874 hours which I suspect it is really just under one hour (.874 of an hour). The frame rate you give (25000 fps) is just not possible -- but if you are in a PAL country, it would be 25 fps. And as someone else has already observed, the variable bit rate maximum you give is unrealistically high -- I suspect it could be 1500, but if so, it would be low quality indeed.
Are you sure there were no decimal points anywhere in those figures in particular?

As I said in the other post, when creating DVDs with the new patch all my projects are in sync now.
Since my previous post I have created over 25 DVDs that are all in sync.

HaHaHa you're right about the duration I didn't even stop to think about that one, I can't be bothered going back to check again, but yes it is just under an hour so .874 is more likely.Ken Berry wrote:Some of the properties you give are completely whacky! The 25000fps - Again you're right, 25fps fits the bill much better.
The 15000 bit rate I have checked and double checked. The original file was listed as 14000 and when I created this current file with VS as per the recommended procedure, it comes out listed as Variable 15000max. It may well be wacky but I have no explanation beyond that.
Black Lab and others, thanks for the input and please excuse my frustrated rantings.
