Wow I have done this many times in the past (years ago) but cannot remember how I did it.
I have a video clip of a building which has a sign bottom right. I also have a video clip of that sign close up which I converted to an image and then 'painted out' all the background with a particular color which I will use as a 'chroma key' so that part of the image does not display.
I then drag that image (from my library) to the overlay track.
I apply a chroma key to the image on the overlay track and adjust the color to 100%
I then apply a 'picture in picture' filter and ccreate my key frame markers - as I want to start with the close up of the sign filling the screen and then create motion to move it to overlay the bottom right of the clip in the timeframe and reduce its size.
All that works perfectly EXCEPT as the overlay picture reduces in size and moves the clip on the timeline disappears to black (see attached screen shot)
Picture in picture - how to

Hi John
PinP requires an additional mask, the rectangular mask from the chroma profiles, that should remove the PinP black background
Not on the pc at the moment so cannot give more details
However I would modify your process
When editing the image delete the background and save as ping, which supports transparency
Now when you use the image you do not need chroma to remove the background
Apply Customise Motion to the image to resize and position
The above will not need chroma or PinP
John what version of video studio are you using, your profile shows X6, is that correct?

Thanks for the quick reply,
Yes still using X6 even though I have a more recent version. Happy and familiar with X6 so couldn't see the point to upgrade and possibly have to go through a learning process.
Ah yes PNG format with transparent background - seems heaps easier.
I will try that out tomorrow.

Re: Picture in picture - how to
Creating and using a PNG with transparency worked so well that I don't know why I didn't find out about that before.
Maybe it is because back in the 'dark ages' I used Mediastudio (I think that is the name) by ULEAD (pre Corel) to create moving images using a 'chroma key' (or similar) to achieve this (and create a short video clip which I then imported to VS) as the then current version of VS could not do that.
Customise Motion is so much easier as there is no gueswork as to resizing and positioning.
I am loath to pay much for an upgrade from VS6 as often the newer version contains stuff I don't think I would ever use.
I do have V7 compliments of Corel for being a Beta tester many years ago. Don'y know why I never installed it.
In your opinion what are the more sifnificant versions V7, V8, V9, V10? I would consider looking at Ebay for those versions.
Thanks again heaps.

Re: Picture in picture - how to
Hi John
For the projects you are working on I think X6 and X7 are suitable programs
You should install X7 which can be done without uninstalling X6 so you can continue your work whilst you test X7.
Long ago and cannot remember what differences between X6 and X7
The latest version now taken on a date type name as “Corel Video Studio 2019”, Paint Shop Pro have done the same using 2019
The last version to use the X was X10.
Whilst running X6 should get you a good deal for CVS 2019, (check Messages) I would not bother with that as they have removed support for Digital Dolby when using Windows 7.
For Windows 10 users they have removed support for Digital Dolby Surround Sound, although stereo is available.
Whats changed?
Most editing techniques haven’t changed that much,
Additional timelines
Changed library layout, I don’t like it but we get used to it.
Gap editing added to 2019
Ability to edit 4K video
Updated Title editors.
Updated MyDVD, may not be provided with X6?
Like you I am using a camcorder recording to MTS I don’t think there is anything that the newer versions bring that I cannot do using X7
Bog standard home video.
But If you do wish to upgrade I would go for X9 or X10, take care to purchase the ultimate versions.
