New Print template

Post by Cassel »

In the Print Layout window, I can choose an existing template, but by hovering over the first icon on the toolbar, it says "New Template". Strangely, I have tried several versions of PSP on two different machines, and clicking on that icon does absolutely nothing.

Is that where I could create my own template? Does it work for anyone else?
Is that working for anyone?

After using PSP for over 15 years, it is the first time I want to use that feature so I never saw it "not working" before.

I use PSP 2018, and I agree. I see the same nonbehavior you see. Worse, I see nothing in the Print window. I can open more than one image and select the one I want to print, but nothing shows up in the Print window. Even worse, if I select Print Setup (the gear icon) the Print window is blank. If I select Print Setup (called Print Preview in PSP7) in PSP7, the image shows up in the Print window, and if I select Page Setup the image shows up in the print window.

Yet there is a difference in PSP 2018, PSPx9 and PSPx8 between reaching for an image display in the print window in Print Setup if you reach it via the menu vs an icon on the toolbar. The main Print window is still blank, however. I'll try to dig back to when this started, but I used my copy of PSP7 for printing while I was using PSPx for editing, so I just don't know.

In PSP7, the image showed up in both the page setup and the print preview print windows, whether from menu or icon. There was nothing said about templates.
My copy of PSP8 no longer works.
In PSP9, Open Template was available from Print Layout. The templates were Avery, Avery International, Combinations and Standard Sizes. Each template sowed what you would get if you selected it. The image did not show up in the Print window but did in the Setup window.
By PSP10 (PSP X), all image previews were gone.
I get the impression that this missing stuff is all from missing links.

Sorry I was pressed for time. The templates were:
Template1.jpg
Template2.jpg
Template3.jpg
Template4.jpg
You will note that screenshots 1&2 (the Avery templates) have horizontal sliders, indicating more choices. Each template can be chosen individually.

I see that on all my versions, but my question is about creating a NEW template, from the very first icon in the toolbar. You see the same thing? Nothing happens when you click it?

Well, I shouldn't say 'Nothing.' Nothing appears in my Print Layout mode. In Edit mode, if New or New from Template icons come stock with a new install . . . I removed those long ago. However, in the menu, I see a choice of New from Template. If I select that, I see six choices of template types. I also can choose from a dropdown submenu that changes, depending on my main choice. Most temples cost something; but a few are free.

However, in Print Layout I get the icon for Templates but nothing happens when I click on it. But in Print... I get a tab for Template.

You will note that the image to be printed is prest but the choice of templates is greyed out.

In Print Layout first select any template other than the blank one that first appears in Print Layout. Then click the New Template button. The template you had selected will be replaced by a blank white template. This is the same template that appears in all of the template categories as the first template in the template preview windows and which is named New. It is the same result you get if you click on the File menu item and select New Template from the dropdown menu.

Now, this is interesting. When I click on Print to Template I get the same 4 template types as was on PSP9. However, when I select a type and press OK the program leaves me as before -- as if I had not pressed anything!

I see. In older versions, that icon shows "Custom template" and newer ones show "New template".

I guess I was looking for a way to create a new custom template for the Print Layout but that is obviously not the way to do it. Any idea of how to do it?

Open Print Layout. Arrange several images (or copies of one image) on the blank template, resizing each of them to the size you want the various template boxes to be when the custom template is saved. Also, of course, arrange those images in the positions in which you want the template boxes to be saved. Then click File>Save Template. Give your template arrangement a name and also optionally enter a description of the what the template layout looks like or is designed to do. Make sure the box at the top to save with images is unchecked. Click OK. Close Print Layout.

The next time you open Print Layout and click File>Open Template (or use the Open Template icon) you'll see a User Defined category. Your saved template will be there. Open it and you'll see boxes that are in the position and of the sizes that you had created into which you can then place images.

Just so you know, this information is in the Help files, albeit very wordy in that it is tucked away along with a whole bunch of other information about using the Print Layout dialogue.
