CSS protected DVDs

Post by rdenny »

If you want to import from DVD, and the DVD is CSS-protected, you can use DVD RegionFree or DVDIdle (various versions are available). After installing, start the program and select Program, Add, and navigate to vstudio.exe. Afterward, check to see that vstudio is in the Supported DVD programs list.

After this, you will be able to use UVS9's "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" with a CSS-encrypted DVD in your drive. DVDIdle is not a warez/crack/phreak program. You pay for the capability. It inserts a "shim" above the DVD drive layer and below the client prog (UVS9) when running, basically renders encrypted DVDs usable for import.

There are several flavors of this prog.

This program is probably illegal in the USA. Under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) it is illegal to "crack" copy protection. And, paying the company that wrote the cracking software does NOT mean that you don't have to pay the copyright holder!!!!

Now, under US copyright laws you can make personal non-commercial copies (fair use copyright exception and The Audio Home Recording Act of 1992). But apparently, these exceptions do not allow the use of illegal software.

Hmm... OK I understand... and my apologies for a possible borderline post.

I am not a cracker (software flavor or racial flavor!) so I wouldn't ordinarily recommend or even alert people to something illegal. You're right -- paying for the software doesn't make it legal.

My apologies. My usage of the software is for DVDs that I use for my personal use only.
