trying to check the boxes next to the chapters. first one i click on freezes the program. really don't want to have to start from scratch and go with the dvd-ram (though i may just go that route) for the camera (already have several 8mm dvd-r full of baby video...) just want to get more than 30 minutes transfered over from the 8mm dvd's to 12mm to send out to family.

but if someone has another way to do it, it would be appreciated. like i said i'm extremely new to the whole video/video editing stuff (last camera i had was compact VHS  )

Thanks

Dasandho,
How long did you wait? I recently imported some video it acted as if it was frozen, task manager even said the program was not responding. I tried again, then went and made dinner, when I came back it wasn't frozen anymore and I was able to import the chapters I wanted. I didn't have the same problem on other DVD's I've imported, not sure if it was because it's a mini-DVD or maybe there was a chapter that was pretty long that the computer took awhile to load. At any rate it worked, just had to be patient.

The DVD/VR import module in VS9 was "improved" from the one in VS8. VS8 was lightning fast at the task but was rather inflexible regarding how you imported and what you imported. The new module is the same one as the new one in the latest DVD Movie Factory version and has a tendency to do exactly what you have described.
The Aug 2005 update patch for VS9 eliminated the problem even though on Ulead's site it does not specifically say that it addresses this problem. The trial version of VS9 will most likely have the original module but unfortunately you cannot apply the patch to a trial version.
At the other end of this problem is also the firmware of the DVD reader which may be causing VS difficulties in reading the media.
I eliminated the problem by:
a. Applying the the update patch.
b. Upgrading my DVD ROM formware to a known stable version.

That did it. Thanks :D

re: import from dvd problem

I'm having big problems importing from DVD as well. Every time I select import DVD option, I get the window with the checkboxes - I can then click anywhere within that window, and VS9 crashes within about 20 seconds.

I've tried copying to HD, and repairing using fixVTS, but still nothing, and I've tried renaming the VOB files to MPG, but that loses the sound. I've downloaded the patch, but when I try to install it, it says that it is unable to find Video Studio 9 installed on my system (I've done a complete uninstall and reinstall to check if this made a difference, but no...). I've tried to contact tech support, but there seems to be some jam on the register page that means that I can't get past it...

any ideas, anyone?

Look at this post and see how to do a "clean" uninstall. Then re-install and then you should be able to apply the patch.

thanks - tried this, but it still says that it cannot find VS9 installed on the system when I try to install the update.

Are you using the full version of VS9 or an SE version or the trial?

sorry - should have said, full version. I had the trial, but was told I needed to purchase the full version to apply the update and get this to work, so I did and - thus far - it hasn't... Win XP, Matrox Parhelia/RT.X100.

What Full Version do you have?
Is it the version that one activates via the internet?
Or the download ESD version?

If you installed the trial there are probably still settings in the registry
that must be removed.

I have the full version that I downloaded from the online store. If anyone can has a record of what settings I need to delete from the registry, that would be great - the post linked to earlier merely described some files that needed removing...

thanks for the help,

Matt
