Which ULead product for editing from DVD source
I'm new to video editing although I have transferred some VHS tapes to DVD in the past but have never captured from a digital source before. I'd like some advice on the following please - I have a DVD which a relative has burned from a VHS original but I wish to edit out some parts of it and re-burn it to another disk.
I am unsure which ULead product would be best for this task although another forum I posted the question on has suggested Video Studio.
Any suggestions please?

Sorry I meant to ask, do I really need the latest version of Video Studio to do this? I have seen v.7 for sale on EBay at very good prices - new, sealed packs not used disks.THoff wrote:Yes, Videostudio will do this easily.
Note however that it will only import video and audio from a DVD, but not menus or subtitles.

I would advise that you go for version 9 disc not download (same price)
Version 8 had a few problems, leave 8 alone.
Version 7,
As far as I know there are different types SE version and SE-Dvd.
If you do decide V7 make sure you know what you are buying. Be careful.
You could buy from e-bay then up-grade to 9 at a discount from Ulead.
Version 9 for me has been the best they have released. Go with 9.

UVS 7 can import from DVDs as well by changing the capture plugin to one designed to perform this function. That plugin comes with the program.
UVS 8 and 9 make the job considerably easier and have a menu command to do the capture. UVS 9 streamlines it even more by giving you more control over what gets imported.
Only UVS 8 and UVS 9 will handle AC-3 Dolby Digital audio, but UVS 8 requires the purchase of a plugin. Without the plugin, you get NO audio just the video.
The bottom line is that UVS 9 is the best tool for what you are trying to do.

Sorry to drag up this old post again but it has taken me this long to get my finger out and act upon the recommendations - apologies! I have recently downloaded the trial version of VS9 but I notice that, according to the user manual, the option to capture source material from a DVD seems to apply to a domestic DVD player, presumably attached to a capture card in the same way as capturing VHS. I really wanted to be able to capture straight from the PCs DVD drive but this doesn't seem to be possible. Or does soemone out there know better? Any advice please would be grateful.

Hi Franco,
Yes VS9 can easily do this.
Yes VS9 can easily do this.
- Place the DVD in your PC's DVD tray.
- Open VS9
- On the Edit Tab click on the Folder Icon located in the lower left of the storyboard/timeline.
- Select Insert DVD/DVD-VR
- A dialog box will open for you to browse to the DVD Drive.
- Point to the DVD Drive where the DVD is located.
- The DVD should have Folders, click on the Video_TS
- Another dialog box will open with about 4 windows, Disc Label, Info, Window with 3 Tabs (Audio, Subtitle, Angle), and a Preview. The window on the left (Disc Label)should have choices Title and Subtitle with boxes to the left.
- Check each box to import the Titles and Chapters you want to edit.
- Viola !! VS9 will import them into the Storyboard/Timeline..

Thanks for the info guys - and a Happy New Year
Sods law, the only wizard I didn't check in UVS9 was the third one and that is where the steps you've outlined were! Doh!
Unfortunately when I navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the disk I just get a "Failed To Open DVD" error despite the fact the disk plays OK in Power DVD. It is a disk that was recorded by someone for me so maybe it is just a dodgy copy. I will try the process on another disk as a test and report back.

... and apart from Nero, if you can manage to copy the contents of the DVD to your computer, you could try 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR' from there. Or resort to the old tried and true simple renaming of the VOB files with an .mpg extension, and then find the bits your were after when you import these mpegs into VS.
If it appears the DVD has some error in its structure, one of our colleagues recently used a little freeware program called FixVTS which can be found at http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/ I think to use it, though, you have to have copied the DVD to your hard drive. Once you have corrected the structure, you should then be able to use VS9 to import the video from it.

another noob here...with a related question.
Using the VideoStudio 9 trial version (not the type that just runs out and picks up anything more than $20 on a whim
). following all the directions i've found here on these boards, and from the support link on Ulead's homepage. i think i'm doing it right. But when i attempt to import video from a DVD it brings up the titles/chapters to select for import. soon as i attempt to select the chapters the program seizes up on me and crashes. is this just a fault in the trial version? I'd rather use something designed for decent video editing vice the "freebee" ware that came with the camera (which only works with DVD RAMS anyway...)

Dasandho - according to the answer above from earlier in this thread, VS9 won't import menus. I can't verify this as I still havn't got that far in my attempts to import from a DVD.THoff wrote:Yes, Videostudio will do this easily.
