Importing transparent EPS file

Hello,

I'm trying to transition from Photoshop to PSP. I generally use Photoshop for adding colour and character to my AutoCAD drawings.

My usual workflow is to export my sheets from AutoCAD as EPS files (postscript level 2) and open them in Photoshop, where they appear at scale and transparent for me to colour in behind the lines. However, when I import these files into PSP the scale seems to be ok but they import with a white background, which makes them much harder to work with.

Is there a way to make PSP import these EPS files transparently as they do with Photoshop? Under 'file format preferences' I've checked and unchecked 'render transparency' and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I've opened the same EPS file in both Photoshop and PSP, and it opens transparently into PS but opaque in PSP, so I'm sure it's a setting within PSP rather than within AutoCAD.

Those threads certainly explain the problem. So, one can open an EPS in PSP. What would you do to have the white background turned into a transparency? After that, it is easy to save one's image as a PNG, which does preserve transparency.

The frustrating thing is that Photoshop will import these EPS files without the white background, ready to edit immediately. It's a great pity the same thing with the same file doesn't happen in PSP. It means I'm probably going to have to keep looking for another programme to use.

I tried messing with blending ranges, but the results weren't that great. I could get rid of the white background, but not without fading the black CAD drawing lines to grey. If it would just import the EPS without the white background like photoshop does, then I could just crack on with my work.... Surely there's a setting somewhere?

Must be a new feature. I have Photoshop CS2 (v9); also Adobe Illustrator CS2. PSP 2018, PS CS2 and AI CS2 open EPS files, but all do so with a plain white background. None of my other (many) image editors will open EPS files at all.

Every version of photoshop I've used since I first starting using Photoshop in 2002 has imported EPS files in this way. It may be something to do with how AutoCAD exports EPS files, rather than photoshop.

Either way, I discovered last night that .png files can be made transparent within PSP, which has allowed me to colour my drawings as I always have. I'll need to do a print out to check scale, but the canvas size seems correct so I'm sure the scale can't be too far off.

Are you using the "true" Blend mode ?
In the Layers Palette :
-> Right-click / Promote Background layer
-> Right-click again on the layer
-> Properties
-> Blend Range
-> Grey Channel
-> This layer : upper right triangle cursor set to 200 (or more or less). I suppose you work in pure black and white, without grey shades.

PS : if you want to paint in color, why do you need transparent ? You may fill the white with some colors. Or I'm missing something of your workflow ?
