I'm another "Improper argument" victim

Post by mars-red »

I've done some searching since receiving this error and it seems to have happened to a lot of people, and I keep reading things like "difficult to diagnose" and "unknown cause", which is not giving me a great feeling about the reliability of the product. My project is not very complicated at all, there is only a still photo with a cross fade into a video clip. Music clip playing for a few seconds before fading out. Video clip has a color correction effect on it. Somewhere in the course of using the app it ended up in a state where any time I pull up the Filters panel, then press the button to show Audio filters, it breaks the app. First symptom is that no audio filters show up. Attempts to flip back to showing video filters result in no video filters showing. Also no paths, transitions, etc, will show up any longer. Subsequent to this, attempting to exit the program results in what at first appeared to be an endless loop of dialog boxes showing the "Improper argument" error. If i let it go for a 5 or 6 seconds they finish showing up, I don't know how many hundreds of them there are but I grew tired of clicking through them to close them so I just have to kill the app from Task Manager. I've tried this several times, each time with the same behavior. I understand it's likely something messed up in my project, but that's pretty concerning because the only thing that would have messed it up is Video Studio itself.

Is there any hope for this situation? I see many of the other threads end with "you should probably contact Corel support" - I'm curious to hear from anyone who has contacted them about this, did the situations ever get resolved?

Hi Max

Yes I did report the “improper argument error”, It was easy to replicate in doing so Corel were able to fix.

Obviously random errors like this are hard to find, so if you and others can replicate this then there is a good chance of a fix.
I have tried to replicate the project using the details in your post but all works well with no errors.

Are you able to create a shorter project showing the error, Smart Package, zip and upload to a sharing site so we can test.
Corel Support would also request a sample project.

What type of video are you using, and can you create the problem using the library media sample videos / images etc

For the time being can you resave the project giving it a new name, then rename the project file to use TXT as its file extension, this will allow you to attach the file to your post here, ( we cannot attach VSP files)
Then we should be able to rename back to VSP and open using Video Studio, of course we would have to re-link / replace your clips to test the project.
