Manually organise palette order and re-map colours

Hi all,

Forgive me if I missed something but I'm trying to do a REALLY simple task but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.

I have my image on screen and I have the palette for it set (16 colours). Now I want to change the order number of the colours but there seems to be no real way to easily do this bar a VERY limited choice from a drop down menu in the 'Edit Palette' section. Furthermore, if I do change the colour order from the drop down menu (or otherwise) I cannot find a simple re-map option to correct the colour changes made to the palette in the image.

Am I missing something here?

I use Paint Shop Pro to do graphics for video games and organising the palette correctly is vital.

Nope you're not missing anything.

So what kind of remapping are you looking to do? Just drag and drop? Or assigning a color to a palette spot? What method would work best for your workflow?

While I can think of nothing in PSP to allow greater control of palette colors there might be something we can do with scripting.

Also what size images are you traditionally dealing with?

Based on that, should OP just construct a new palette, with the colors in the order he wants? He is only using 16 colors, and if he is doing this a lot, it would make sense to build a custom palette . . . once. Is there a show-stopper here?

The problem lies in re-mapping. If they are creating from scratch, then they can create a palette of colors in any order they want. But if they are, say decreasing the number of colors in an already existing image and now want to re-order the colors then they can do this. Or if they have already made hundreds of images. To have to manually go back in and change things is annoying. They can load in a custom palette, but it won't remap the colors. It'll just change what colors show on which pixels. Creating an unintended look.

So I'm proposing a script that will allow re-ordering and re-mapping. How? Not sure. Probably using selections and color fills. Or, saving a copy of the image to the clipboard and editing it in memory before pasting it back down. There are options.
