Mask Layers and Artifacts

Mask Layers and Artifacts
I regularly use mask layers but constantly have the problem shown in the attached image. If I use the brush to 'show' and area and then repaint that area to hide it, then I get the blocking shown in the image, any ideas? I am using the latest version of PSP Pro Ultimate and this problem has happened in many previous versions.

Are you working on greyscale images or color images ?
If greyscale, are you in 8bit/channel ?

Also do you have more than one mask layer and have accidentally done some of the changes on the other layer such that if you have painted on the same area it has shown through both layers to transparency.
