Erase white paper

Post by ToreB »

In Affinity Photo there is a function called "erase white paper", that transform a white background to transparency, leaving colored pixels as if they from the start had been painted on a transparent background. Partial transparency in the colored pixels stay partial transparent.

PhotoLine software has the same function, which they call "Color to transparency".

I wonder if there is a similar function in my newly aquired Paint Shop Pro 2019?
This function is NOT the same as the "background eraser tool" which is a sort of transparency fill, that does not take into account the already present transparency values (alpha map) in the given picture.

Someone with more expertise may answer this, but PSP has a 'Set color to Transparency' setting in Image > Palette > Set Palette Transparency. This will allow you to set the background color to any one of 256 colors (you must set the image to 256 colors first).
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Thanks for the reply, but this is not the function I'm talking about. The "erase white paper" works on the alpha channel of a 32 bit picture, making pure white (255,255,255) 100% transparent and then merges any transparency allready present into the alpha channel. I think. You can see the effect on the attached picture.

Background Eraser isn't just a transparency fill, it's also a color demixer for softer edges. This can have the effect of rendering an area of an image unrecoverable as it deletes portions of color while adding transparency. Any attempts to recover will result in strange color distortions as a result. The regular eraser is a regular transparency fill.

I had to download both Photoline and Affinity Photo to play with these options to see how they worked.

PSP does not have an exact equivalent to this filter. PSP can, however, use the KillWhite plugin - http://mikes3d.com/extra/scripting-plugins/killwhite/

Thanks a lot LeviFiction! The Killwhite plugin seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Only drawbacks being that it only works in 32bit and that there is no adjustment possibilities in the plug-in. It could be nice if PSP had this filter (plus adjustments) built in. Thanks again!

Jean-Luc: Even better!! This works perfectly, has excellent control and functions in 64bit version of PSP without the need for external plug-ins. Thanks :-)

Once I figured out that you were moving the right triangles instead of the left it went swimmingly. Lovely, Jean-Luc. Shall the away team celebrate?

The white cursor acts on the white color and the black cursor on the black (easy to remember).
If you want remove the blue (sky for example), use the Blue channel...

I don't know if the script will work better for you than the other suggestions. If you want to try it - and don't have it - then let me know and I'll post it in the Scripting sub-group.

The script doesn't retain transparency.
It is based on :
-> Selections
-> Select all
-> Modify / Select Color Range

Thanks for the info. In that case it won't fit all of the requirements of the original poster so I don't think it's worth posting the script.
