Hue and Saturation values ? ? ? DON'T MATCH

Post by Myriadelle »

The Hue and Saturation values indicated on the Material Properties Dialog Box do not match the hue & saturation values in the "Colorize" feature.
Is there a way to convert?... Or, is there a method to install the OLD Material Properties Dialog Box from PSPX8?
Better question.... Is there a way for me to find the Hue and Saturation values which MATCH the Colorize feature with an eye dropper tool????

My application:
I use the eye dropper of the material properties to determine the hue and saturation of an accent color within my image. Next, as a bordering or stylistic layer, I add a colorized matching element. Without the H&S numbers matching, my element doesn't match either. HUMPH!!!!

To revert to the old Materials Palette, go to File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences -> Palettes and tick the box for use classic Materials Properties.

IF YOU HAVE PSP 2018 DO NOT TRY "use classic Materials Properties!" I experimented with that and now I cannot get the new (and improved) palette back.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

@ehume - I am able to switch back and forth between the old and new Materials Properties in PSP 2018 with no issues.

I find your question somewhat confusing, partly because your profile doesn't say which version of PSP you are presently using (and you should add that information in your profile).

You ask if you can install the old materials properties dialogue FROM PSPX8. That implies that you are asking if you can install the materials properties dialogue from PSPX8 into another, likely later, version of PSP.

Or were you asking if, if PSPX8, could you change the materials properties dialogue from what you are seeing in X8 to another, older version of that dialogue.

Can you clarify exactly which is the correct interpretation of your question?

Not sure what Miriadelle is talking about. They state that the Hue and Saturation on the Materials palette do not match the Hue and Saturation values on the Colorise dialog and then shows us an image where they do match.

OK I tested using some images of different colored flowers and set a Colorise value of Hue 140 and Saturation 130 - This gave a cyan colored section in the circular selection.
I then switched to the Materials palette and Sliders and set at HSL. (I changed the eyedropper to show HSL values in the General Preferences > Palettes section.)
I then checked the image using the eyedropper and found that the Hue was 198 and the saturation varied in differet parts of the image.

I also noted that in the colorise dialog the hue goes from 0 to 255 while in the materials palette the slider goes from 0 to 359 so the two scales are different and should not be expected to show the same . If you calculate 140 / 255 and multiply that by 359 then the results are approximately get with the image.
So short answer is that they should not match as they use different scales a bit like comparing water at 80 degrees Fahrenheit which is quite comfortabel to water at 80 degreed Celsius where you will get scalded. They both measure Temperature but use different scales.

Thank you, ALL, for your replies!!!!

Hartpaul, you nailed my poorly described issue. The colorize dialog is a scale of values which does not match the value scale of the eye dropper.
Yes, I have the mathematical skills to be able to convert... BUT.... I feel the user should not have to convert. Both scales should match. [Corel take note.]

I am new to this forum. This was my first post. I so appreciate the feedback I received.

I have done two things for my personalized use. #1, I have converted to the classic material properties palette (for the time being), with the knowledge the new palette has many more options. #2, I have done the calculations to convert the eye dropper reading - multiplying it by .71 to achieve the colorizing value.

Again.... THANK YOU ALL.
