I have a student with a vexing re-installation fails problem. Last week her computer screen fried, and when replaced, Video Studio 2018 needed to be re-installed. She's been thru that process a few times, with no result. Complaints to Corel support have elicited some help, but so far nothing has worked. This is her latest email commentary to the Corel support person about this:
quote
I have gone through the installation process 5 times (including removal of VS2018, clean up, removal of personal files in volume 21.0 and running the installation software). I have taken the advice of disabling Trend Micra (anti virus) and re-activating after the full process and I have run the EXE file as Administrator but the same outcome continues – I reach the end of installation and it says I can launch the software but when I do I get the front screen (with the athletic cyclist) on top of any other screens. It has a little ‘slider’ in right hand side of box which dots its way left and right but the software never opens – I estimate this runs approximately 5 minutes and sits resolutely on top of Outlook or whatever program is behind it – it cannot be moved or closed. Eventually it goes away but there is no way of opening the program – although I know it is not the correct way to open the program, I have attempted to open a VSP file and the result is the same.
I am annoyed at the waste of time, for no outcome.

I am out of ideas. The install seems OK, the time for the 1st start of the splash screen does seem excessive, but it's always long on the first start after install. It's the splash screen going away with no further action that is a killer. Can anyone help?

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
David, when the splash is out but no program insight it shows that the process is still hanging there.
Kill it in Task Manager and re-lunch VS.
I believe the saga is on WIN 10, is it not?
Lets wait for Trevor the Re-installation Master.

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
Yes, she is running windows 10.
The uninstall/re-install process she mentions is the one I wrote, Trevor reviewed last year (July) and was submitted to Corel, for inclusion in the user guide (which never happened). That document also is the basis of a class handout I provide students for just this event. When the cause of the failed start is identified I'll have to update it.

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
Hmmm
Some thoughts
1 / Try running the program As Administrator, right click the desktop icon for options.
Don’t think it will make a difference but worth a try.
2 / On start the program looks at the internet, if there is an issue there then it may interfere with the launch.
So disconnect the internet and try running the program. If it does start there will be no Welcome Screen or Triple Scoop etc.
3 / Try re-installing the program but only install the Main program, do not install Contents or Bonus Features or Service packs.
If it now starts ok I would install the other packs one at a time Contents and Service Patch and if ok finally install the Bonus Features.

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
Trevor,
I've had a PM from Ken about an apparent email failure from the board re your last post. Cannot say why that happened but I did not get it, and my address has not changed. I've been using the email service normally this morning with no indication at all of any problem until I read Ken's PM.
re the topic.
The student has kept me a CC on the emails she gets and sends to Corel support about this issue. I've reviewed the responses she got from support, and one re uninstall was to use the cleanup program that is listed on this board, which isn't the detailed update on install and un-install for 2018 I drafted and you extensively critiqued last year. I submitted the final of that document suggestion to Nick (as he requested) last July, and I did consider that since the 2018 user guide is "on-line" and can be easily updated there, the suggestion would appear sooner or later. It's now much later and it hasn't appeared: clearly the Corel product team wasn't interested in it.
That (much) revised install and uninstall program process has been the basis of a class handout I now use just for this purpose. When the issue of re-install came up, I reminded student of that handout and discussed uninstall stage 4 in it: after the Corel clean-up, use the cclean (or equivalent) cleaner program to remove unwanted files and registry entries. Because the draft document suggestion was intended for use in Corel's 2018 user guide I refrained from naming a non-Corel branded product for stage 4 of uninstall, referring instead to "Using any available cleaner program". Stage 4 involves removing leftover temporary files, and cleaning the registry of any links to them, so I consider it particularly important to do: and the Corel clean-up tool doesn't do anything about leftovers in the registry. I've found that even a normal VS uninstall and clean-up leaves dozens of related entries in the registry, and any left over there can (and has: personal experience) cause an install problem later, which (this topic) is what she is reporting now.
Not specifying a particular cleaner program for stage 4 may have been a mistake: student might have mistaken using the Corel clean-up tool referenced in stage 2 as sufficient for that, and not done stage 4. I am trying to clarify that now.
Once we know what the cause and fix of this problem is, I'll update the document. But since Corel isn't interested in the document suggestion maybe it should be posted in the user forum.

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
David
Has the options to run the program as admin and without internet been tried as my earlier post suggestions
After I post this I will check the e-mail server to see if the post notification has bounced again
Sometimes this happens without reason, but repeated could indicate a bad or changed e-mail address
post updated
looks ok so far
by the way -- the failed post notification was in response to Asik1's earlier reply
I also viewed your profile - preferences and "Notify me upon replies by default:" is set to NO, if you change that you should get all replies irrespective of the option at the bottom of your post.

Re: Re-installation of 2018 fails
Trevor,
on topic - she has responded to my query, and did run Cclean at stage 4, commented on how much rubbish there was. But also remarked that she could not find the stage 3 roaming item to remove. It's easy for the eye to skip over, and I've responded to her about how to find it (it has to be there), and why it's necessary to remove it before starting a new install. If she could not find it to remove, the following install was very likely incomplete, in that the old roaming folder got used with the new install.
I've emailed her about that and will advise further. Unfortunately finding it means she will have to start over: uninstall, clean up, remove folders, run cclean for files and the registry, and then install for the 6th time. A large pissed off quotient is already apparent before she reads that.
updated after re-reading your post
Has run vstudio as administrator after install, but (I think) not with the internet disconnected: it has to be connected for install, and with the run being initiated immediately, unlikely to be disconnected.
About the profile item you mentioned,
I looked and could not find what you referred to, in any of the profile tabs. Can you advise how to find it?
