VStudio X9 Ripple Editing

Post by JimDodds »

So... working with X9, LARGE project and no matter what I check - or uncheck - ripple editing just doesn't work. Moreover, I have no chain link icon. Set enable, all tracks locked on, it doesn't work, all tracks but one added music track checked, doesn't work. I mean, I change the length of a clip, main track, overlay track, anywhere, and nothing happens. Any ideas please on how to get to square one? Or even select all the clips on all the tracks, so I can move everything, and then make my first clip longer?

Thank you!!! :?:

Oh, and PS How do I update my profile?

Ah, you need to clarify the version you either are running, or have installed, which is the basis of the topic. For example, ripple editing in X9 has padlocks, whereas ripple editing in 2019 has chain links. A screen shot of the user interface including the timeline area and tracks would help.

Next, in either version, ripple editing needs to be turned on, and then can be selected on or off for individual tracks, or all tracks. There's an icon at the extreme LH end of the timeline track which does this (hover the mouse over it and a tip appears) for either version.

AND, while ripple editing is very helpful, it has a trap: with it on, with related clips in the text, voiceover and music tracks, and you want to delete a clip from the timeline (TL), there will be a query, and if you confirm VS deletes the selected TL clip and all the associated items (text, voice and music) as well. To avoid the extras removal, undo rippled editing for that TL deletion, and re-enable it afterwards: but you may have to adjust the text and voiceover clip alignment with the TL; possibly music as well, altho that tends to be over a number of TL clips.

What I do is put in text and sound after laying out the video as much as I can. Then sudden inserts become greatly diminished.

I've been fooling around since I made this post and I discovered what my problem was a little while ago. What needs to be clarified is WHERE your ripple edit gets applied.
1. The KEY to Ripple Editing is that
2. ANY change you make is applied to everything
3. AFTER the
4. END of the clip you’re changing
I was looking at the clips under the one I was changing the length of and not noticing that the clips after all that were being "rippled"

Otherwise, good clarification by you guys...

but I still don't know how to update my profile ;-)

Ripple editing only applies if you have enabled it on a particular track after enabling it on the video track. In fact, you may find that you don't want to enable ripple editing on all tracks.

 This may be a major error.
I started experimenting and ended up creating forth-five minutes of fully completed media. I just discovered the opening titles were missed. I need to add a clip and title at the front of an eight track project. Enabling Ripple editing did not work. None of the tracks will move back.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank You

I see in your profile that you are using VS 2019. If so, have you updated it? Ripple editing was broken in the original version when gaps were introduced into the main timeline. The update seeks to correct ripple editing among quite a few other things.

Please note. I was wrong that Ripple Editing wasn't working. The key is that it only works on the clips AFTER the one you are changing. I was trying to get it to work on the clip at the same position, which obviously doesn't work. I wanted all the tracks to move, and they did, but the clips that ran at the same time, or before, needed manual attention. Thank you.

Thanks Jim,

So, it sounds like I can't add anything new in the first position on the timeline without a lot of re-editing.

Ripple editing locks all other tracks to the top timeline - it will not work if you are adding clips to an overlay or title track - if you want to add something at the beginning try just putting a plain color block at the start in the top track and setting that to the length you require - doing that *should* move all locked tracked as one - then you can add your titles etc. in the appropriate track at the beginning

to modify your profile

at the top of the forum in the top left corner under the large word 'Corel' it says 'Board index' then under that it says "User Control Panel"

Perfect! Thank You.

It moved the video track fine. This is a massive 45 minute project. So, I aligned the overlys, titles and music manually.

One thing I need to dig up are the insructions for Smart Sound from their Tech Support. The music from the auto-music function is pretty limited. The instructions are in my files.
