Keyboard tab missing in customize view

Post by jimbir »

I am trying to change some keyboard assignments. The instructions in the help topics lead me to view > customize > When there, I'm told to click the keyboard tab in the dialog box. It's not there. The only tab I see is options and anything dealing with the keyboard isn't included in them.
Can someone help me with this problem?

Can you post a screenshot of your Customize window? Here's mine (PSP 2018):

The keyboard tab is 3rd from the left. Easy to miss.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Gack! I now know what your trouble is. You are in the Essentials mode. Here is the "Customize" window in Essential mode:
Essentials Customize.jpg
The solution is to switch to Complete mode. As a longtime user of PSP, I have never used that mode. When I went to the Edit tab, I saw that the tool icons were grouped together in a short fat window instead of a toolbar hugging the left edge, as God and the original JASC programmers gave us. The Essentials mode is truly disgusting. You will be glad you switched.

Thank you! I don't know how I managed to fall into the essentials mode, I didn't do it intentionally. Maybe the devil and Corel had something to do with it.

Is there a sensible reason why the essentials mode even exists?

Hardly one that's worthwhile IMHO. Even worse, Corel decided to make it the default workspace when PSP is installed, and without a warning screen to remind people that the program is opening in crippled mode. This has caused many users - first time PSP users as well as not a few users of previous versions - to post here asking why they can't find features that were advertised or that existed in previous versions. Another example of Corel programmers wasting their time coming up with quite useless items rather than spending their thinking time productively by coming up with actual new features that people have requested - or at least fixing issues that have been long complained about, sometimes for years. :(

I've noticed over the years that Corel doesn't seem to be the least bit concerned about fixing the problems in their software. All they do is make some "improvements" to the existing version and then releasing it as a new version that you can buy if you wish. My frustration has led me to purchase a copy of Affinity photo I've gotten about halfway through the learning curve by watching their YouTube video tutorials and am amazed by the clever and useful features they offer.

I agree with you on how useful Affinity is. I had two troubles: I came to it just as I was retiring from writing reviews/photographing products; I have grown to adapt to PSP's features and foibles over the past two decades, so I keep using it. Ah well. They only incrementally change PSP.

I'm kinda with @ehume here. While Affinity might have a few features not offered with PSP, and perhaps do a few things a bit better than PSP with stuff that PSP already does, I haven't seen a real reason to even try it out. Besides the editing features available with PSP - despite some issues like with the new Crop tool - it still offers the most easily user configurable workspace, which is even better enhanced by the ease of script recording to not only speed up repetitive actions but the ability to bind those scripts to buttons for one-click results. And with the script that allows me to bring any other standalone program or filter into PSP as a plugins if want to use something specific from that other program then it's at my fingertips - or mouse click as it were. :)
