Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing them?
New to forum, and X7 (even though I've had it a couple years). You used to be able to open a .ttf font file and minimize it and still be able to have it show up in PSP and use it. I am not able to do that in X7. I like to use lots of different fonts but hate installing them to windows as it slows things down. Did they do away with this ability or is there a different way to achieve this that I have missed? Thanks

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
Since I started using PSP back when it was PS3 it has always used whatever fonts were installed in Windows itself. If you want to see a TTF's properties, how the font will look when installed, double-click, use Enter or (if you have your system set that way) single-click on the TTF file.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

MS stopped that option when they brought in the Win 7 OS. Changes were made for Fonts to improve security.Debbs wrote:You used to be able to open a .ttf font file and minimize it and still be able to have it show up in PSP and use it.
Fonts can now be added via a shortcut.
In the Context Menu of a Font file is the option to Install or Install as a Shortcut.
If you haven't set up for the shortcut you need to do this
Open Control Panel and select Fonts.
Select Font Settings in left list.
In the window that opens click on the box to Allow fonts to be installed using a shortcut.
Or you can use one of the font managers to handle your fonts.

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
I wondered if they changed it.
Very inconvenient, in my opinion. One still assumes risk installing a font into the OS so I don't get the claim they use about security.
I've been using the Install shortcut within the font window itself.
As for a font manager ... Am I correct in that they only give you a view of all characters, not the ability to use a font without installing?
Thank you for being helpful on those tips!

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
I use FontExpert, a retail app, and it has the option to Activate a font. This allows the font to be used until the system is rebooted.
Perhaps most font managers have this option.
I had a quick look and the free FontBase manager has the option to Activate any font without the need to install.
https://fontba.se/
Also free AMP Font Viewer mentions Installation of the font temporally, only until the program is closed.

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
I have not installed a font in Windows in about 20 years from PSP 7 through PSP 2018. I keep them organized in folders according to category in Documents as "All Other Fonts" so they show up in File Explorer at the top. My favorite font manager is FontRunner 3. It's free, has been around for years and still serves me well on Windows 10. It shows a preview of each font and clicking on the preview opens all characters. I've tried other similar font managers but always come back to FontRunner.

For example: Screenshot of All Other Fonts [Folder] in Documents. None of these hundreds of fonts are installed in Windows.

Thanks Linda Lou.
Question: How do you activate the font when PSP is open? Just load the font from Font Runner, then it shows up in PSP font list?
Edit: I finally found the overview, lol ... I think I'm going to try this one. Thanks again!

I presume Font Runner Overview.ehume wrote:Where?

If it doesn't come up, Hover on FontRunner Menu Tab and then select Overview
I meant to add that one in my list above but couldn't find my link at the time.

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
And for those that are confused by how to access the fonts without actually installing them - so that they are available from inside PSP with the text tool - I have found the explanations vague. The only place I could find the word Overview was when you click the blue ? button or the Help > Contents and Index when you se a link to Overview : A Tour of Font runner
I found this works:
1. Open Font Runner and direct it to the folder with the fonts you want available.
2.Look for the Location address and to the far right you will see a hand holding the letter A. This is the Share/Unshare button. If it is missing right click beside the blue button question mark and tick the Font Sharing button.
Or you can do View > Share Fonts with other Applications.
3. There will be a slight delay as all those fonts are then shared to PSP without actually installing them 'permanently' in Windows. If you close Fontrunner they will disappear fro the PSP font list.
Because all the fonts in that folder are shared (I could not find out how to share just one) it may show an unresponding message up the top - mine took about 4 seconds for 65 fonts.
So for speed it may be advisable to place your fonts with a smaller number each in cataloged folders.

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
Yes, I was talking about Overview on Font Runner's website - so I could see what it offered. I'm sorry for any confusion. Thanks for the response, hartpaul!
EDIT: I forgot to add that I did not have to click on Share to get a font to show up in PSP. All I did was open Font Runner > wen to font folder I waned to use by using the tree under Location (left pane) and went to folder and font I wanted > clicked one to get font to show in right side pane and minimized font runner. That font then showed up in psp. I haven't tried other methods, for now.

Re: Can you still use fonts in PSP X7 without installing the
That is correct. Once you click the blue Share button, you are able to always open your (uninstalled) fonts when you open PSP. It's an old app, but it remembers! I have tried several, including trials of paid software, but I have not found a font manager that I like as much. If Font Runner ever ceases to work on Windows I'll be very sad.EDIT: I forgot to add that I did not have to click on Share to get a font to show up in PSP. I found a review:

Memories....
Does anybody remember FontThing? That was another good one from 20? years ago. It is still listed here along with compatible OS Windows 95:
