suggestions to archive DVD and BD

Post by jesse_ »

Over the years I have converted home movies and videos to their current state of DVDs and BDs. I currently am using VS 2018 (Afraid to try 2019 yet from all the bad reviews I see in the forum.) What format would you recommend backing these up to so I could maintain the authored DVDs (Opening, individual videos with chapters, etc.?) Would an iso file be the choice? At some future date would I be able to convert that format to the then current format, keeping the video's architecture? Thanks, Jeff

Not exactly sure what you are asking. The best means of archiving a range of movies on DVD/BR is in a suitable box on the shelf.
If your question is more like - how do I archive the source material those movie disks were created from, in order to free up computer storage space, then there are 2 avenues available:
- if you use some of the material often enough to want it accessible 'on-line', then create a local LAN and attach a network attached store (NAS) for the purpose of storing that material. you have not said how many movies etc you want to archive, but common NAS devices will store 6-10Gb or more on a striped set of disks. Anything larger than that would probably need a local server dedicated managing as many disks as your need for the task.
- you just want the save the source material 'in case', then more disks - DVD or BR - with the source material on them, eg as a smart project. A means of name/number classification would probably be necessary for you to keep the source and result together as a reference pair, and especially to find them when you need them.
