VIDEOSTUDIO X8, X9, X10, X2019 WON'T ACCEPT MOV FILES

Post by LBRESLOW »

Is there any way I can import .mov files into VideoStudio without converting them in software first? Is there a setting I've missed or some method that I have overlooked. I am importing video files from my iPhone 10 and I am only getting audio and no video. I've tried some of the free trials for video conversion, some come in fine others not and of course I only get a portion of the file because it's a trial version. I have a hard time that VideoStudio (in any version) is excluding .mov files from being imported. Please help! Important project with a short timeline. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, Larry.

Successive versions of Video Studio can handle .mov files without problem. But you have to have installed the .mov codec (made by Apple Quicktime) into VS. It does not automatically come with VS. Apple announced a couple of years ago it was no longer supporting Quicktime for PCs, but that related to problems with the Quicktime player. The codec is fine. You can download it from https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837?locale=en_US Make sure you choose Quicktime Essentials.

Thank you so much, Ken. I am working in 10 and I finally downloaded Wondershare and purchased a one year conversion app that allowed me to change from mov to mp4 abd I was able to bring grit in. But what a struggle!!! So, this codec link that you sent me will work with x20, 18 and 19 I assume. Yes?

I have another question: I bought 19, but couldn’t load it without receiving a technical error. Would the presence of previous versions prevent me from loading 2019? Im afraid to uninstall my previous versions for fear I won’t be able to import existing projects that I am currently working on in those versions into 2018 and 2019. I would appreciate your input in this. Thanks for all your support. Larry Breslow

I have Quicktime 7 player installed, have had it for a long time, but VS does not handle MOV files. (It brings them in and gives me the black/white clip indicator, and won't show any of the video in the preview window.)

What do you mean by install the codec "into VS?" (I saw nothing in VS preferences that mentions codecs.) Also the link you supplied is to quicktime player (which I have) and has no mention of "essentials." So the whole paragraph above about downloading essentials and installing quicktime codec into visual studio is not helpful at all. :/

That link contains a Download button at the top. When you click that and then start the installation, you should get a dialogue box like this screenshot.
QT Essentials.jpg
You will notice at the top is the reference to Essentials. All the other things in the list there should be crossed out so that only the Essentials/codec is downloaded. And after that VS should be able to access it.

And I can only repeat that I and a whole range of other users seem to be able to open and edit .mov videos in successive versions of Video Studio without any problems.

If you do indeed have QuickTime 7 installed, suggest you uninstall, download a new copy and follow Kens instructions on installation.
All versions of VS have no issue with .mov files provided the correct codecs are installed on your PC

I've found that the codec is the same as other files that work. BTW they play in WMP and VLC, and also can be read by handbrake. VS is the only thing that refuses to decode the video. :/

Something you seem to be missing.
The Quicktime/mov codec isn't installed "in" Video Studio, but installed under windows for any windows program to use. mov is a video format commonly used by cameras, even tho Apple ceased support for the player (over security issues it decided were too difficult or inconvenient to fix). The mov codec does not come 'with' windows - you have to get and install it if you want to use it - and it's free. The codec is supported by VS but not within itself - if VS detects a mov file it will look for the mov codecs in windows, via the registry. If the mov codec is not on your PC, your mov video will not play.
So follow Ken's instructions, install the codec, and then try your mov clip in VS again.

I wasn't missing that, which is why I found Ken's language confusing, as he said to install it "into VS."

I actually did uninstall and reinstall the QT essentials. (And several reboots, etc.) Nothing changed.

Please note: the video plays on my PC, in everything except Visual Studio. So the codec is (and was) installed. It also successfully works with other MOV files (for example from my Canon EOS) but it (and only it) fails on videos from this particular device.

Sometimes simply changing the mov extension to mp4 allows VS to accept the video.

Why is a paid program lacking in this codec support? I have the free version of Lightworks downloaded and it handles .MOV just fine straight out of the box. There isn't a codec that it doesn't handle. The free version of Lightworks isn't as full featured as VSU but for simple video editing it's superior as you don't have to do any extra steps to get different movies formats working.

Why are you responding to a 3 year old post, if you have something to say, start a new thread, and VS can play MOV, just depends on the containing wrapper

The free version of Lightworks limits export options to 720p and H.264/MP4. This is a severe limitation for most creators. As well, a perpetual license for the Pro version of Lightworks lists for $390US which is steeper than the $99US for VS2022 Ultimate.
spookymyo wrote:I have the free version of Lightworks ... There isn't a codec that it doesn't handle.
A codec is a computer program which encodes or decodes a data stream. VS only supports its own codecs or codecs for which it pays royalties and/or has undisputed "legal" right to use AND which adhere to the documented standards of said codecs. Hence the issue is whether an NLE can handle the resultant data stream - it's unlikely that any NLE can handle all data streams from all codecs. The supported data stream formats in VS2022 are found at https://www.videostudiopro.com/en/produ ... /ultimate/ whilst the Lightworks container support is found at https://lwks.com/lightworks-tech-specs/ However, there are always video files which do not adhere to the documented standards codecs. In these cases, a program like HandBrake is useful to convert the data stream into a format that VS or Lightworks can handle.
