VS 2019 Update had virus in My DVD file - false positive?

Post by buckeyebrood »

VideoStudio 2019 notified me of an update today, and upon installing it, my antivirus immediately notified me of a Trojan virus in the mydvd_vsp.exe file. Of course, I'm concerned that my computer is damaged, but more importantly, why did this happen, and is anyone else having this problem? I assume from the file name and the fact that the "My DVD" shortcut appeared on my desktop post-update that the virus did indeed come from the Corel VideoStudio 2019 update. I have been frustrated with this product from day one as it crashes repeatedly on Windows 10, but a virus in an update file takes the cake. Frustrated and confused. :(

No doubt and false positive. I had no problem with the installation. A scan with Malwarebytes and Panda indicated no virus.

I did the update with no problems (bitdefender antivirus) and after reading your post I did a scan with Malwarebytes Free--nothing. May be a false positive--but just in case I'd recommend doing a scan with Malwarebytes free version.

Following the update, I'm now running VS 2019 22.2.0.396 and Windows Defender had no issues. You don't state what AV software you're using but it sounds like a false positive.

I'm running Kaspersky Total Security. It identified the object as a Trojan program named PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic located within the /mydvd_vsp.exe file that I had just tried to install with the update. I have contacted Corel support, but they said they would have to get back to me about this issue. Thank you for the replies. I have never had my antivirus find anything suspicious before, so this was alarming to me.

Same is happening to me with kaspersky. Not sure what’s triggering it but same file, same warning, worst part is I can’t figure out how to exclude the file from kaspersky and obviously I don’t want a legitimate file to get quarantined or deleted. Didn’t prevent the install just flags as malware when opening vsp 2019.

Appreciate knowing it's not just my PC and software, thank you. It definitely is curious why their file would trigger red flags. I uninstalled the entire My DVD program and am likely requesting a refund for the VS 2019 I purchased earlier this month. It is highly unstable, and now I feel like I cannot trust the company to provide safe updates. So far, CyberDirector has had no issues on my PC, so it looks like a viable alternative.

I also facing a problem with it. Avast is a free antivirus for Computers and Laptops. It protects your system against malicious malware and spyware. ... Sometimes Avast ui failed to load error message comes due to incorrect Windows service configuration. When you update Avast and then restart your system and try to run the software, the error appears.

Can you provide a screenshot of the error message.

You should also report this to Corel Support

Another way to check infections is to run the monthly Microsoft malware tool: free, downloadable and it's kept up to date; and I've found it useful to cite the results from this software in support forums to get some action going from the application vendor. That action being between application and AV vendors. Usually it takes about a week to sort out once the app vendor gets on to it, but the corrective action starts there - the AV vendor doesn't normally listen to one-off complaints from users.

But if you are convinced it is a false positive, you can get your AV to ignore the program file by inserting it into the AV whitelist: a list of files it won't scan.
