Newbie Q's cropping to a set shape

Hello,

Very much newbie questions here so I'm sorry if it's num nuts territory.

I have a simple heart shape that i've created for the size that i need and i was just wondering how i can place my heart shape over a picture image that i've got on one of my layers and crop the image under the heart so im left with a picture that is shaped to the correct size of the heart? If my terminology is of point please feel free to correct me as i want to get to know this software correctly. I've only used gimp and inkscape up to now and that was only brief.

I am assuming that your heart shape is on an otherwise transparent background. I am also assuming that you only want the layer that you are placing the heart on top of to be cropped to the heart shape and not any of the other layers.

If that is the case, place a copy of that heart shape as a layer just above the layer you want cropped. Then select the Magic Wand with Match Mode set to All Opaque. You also might want to check the Anti Alias box and perhaps a Feather of 1 to help make the selection smooth (you can experiment with settings that work best). The click on the heart with the Magic Wand. That should select all of the heart. Then make the layer below the heart active (click on that layer in the Layer's palette. This will place the selection on that layer. Then invert the selection (which will make the selection around everything except the heart shape) and hit the Delete key. This will delete all of that stuff within the inverted selection and leave a heart shape on that layer.

In addition, if you leave the background layer as a <Background> then you will get a white surround around the heart shape after pressing delete. If you first promote the background to a <layer> then you will get transparency around the heart shape.
