Import photos into PSP2019

Post by Graz39 »

8) 8) New User: I am sure this is worth my purchase, but it would be better if I could get my photos into it: IT being PSP2019 Ultimate. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can also access your photos by using the Manage tab to go into Manage mode, where you can select the Computer tab at top left and browse to any folder on your computer that contains images. The images will then show up as thumbnails in the main pane at right. There is a zoom slider at the bottom which allows you to zoom the thumbnails to a size that is comfortable for you to view.

You can then click on any thumbnail and then click the Edit tab to bring that image into your Edit workspace. Or, to open more images at once, either click the first one you want then hold the shift key and click on another further along/down the pane to select those images and all other in between. Or click one image and, with the Ctrl key held down, click various images that may not be in sequence to select just those images. Then again click the Edit tab to open them all in your Edit workspace.

The Organizer puts a ribbon of thumbnails along the bottom of our Edit workspace where you can scroll those image thumbnails horizontally to select images you want to open in the workspace. It is a palette so can also be accessed from the menu bar by clicking on the Palettes menu item and selecting Organizer from the dropdown menu.

Unlike some products I could name that come from another software house, PSP does not Import images. You work on images, but they remain computer files. This is nice for me because when I am done in a raw editor, I save my work as .PNG files. I then pick them up and work on them in PSP, saving my work as .JPG's. I suspect you will like this model as well.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

I would tend to disagree with the last point you made. After working on images in PSP it is best to save them first as .pspimage files so that (a) they are saved losslessly, unlike .jpg format, and (b) all layers are also saved, whereas .jpg doesn't support layers. Then, if you have any reason to, another copy can be saved as jpg files. But even that's not necessary if you are saving them for outside printing purposes, because both photo kiosk places and professional commercial print shops accept images in lossless format such as .png or .tif. And of course you can print from your home printer even with the .pspimage file. And while saving in .jpg format does allow more compression to save disc space, storage is so cheap nowadays I personally don't see any reason for this to be a consideration.

Wise words. And in confirmation, I will say that if I am not done working on an image I will save it to .PSPimage.

I will agree with you on .PNG being lossless. But my work involved no paper printing -- everything I did was for an online magazine, so saving pixels was important for my publisher; hence the .JPG of my final format.

Otherwise, I agree with everything you said. The main thrust of my comment, though, was that PSP does not "import" images into a catalog. The Manager (a good feature) is a file manager.

Hey guys, first post and they say they are a New User and you start spouting about pspimages, raw images , organiser tab, manage tab etc.

First some questions to Graz39:
1. You mentioned Import so this suggests that you have some familiarity with another graphics program - which one(s) have we used .
2. You stated you were a New User - to PSP alone or to any graphics programs.
3. What files are you generally using - jpgs or raw images (these are the main two delivered by cameras and placed in a folder on your computer)

Now before you do anything with your image files (I am assuming they are jpgs from a camera) make at least one backup of those files to a separate location possibly on an external data drive. It would be a shame to operate on the original file from your camera , stuff it up and then lose it.
Now when you installed PSP 2019 and opened it it would have opened in the Welcome screen and had on the top a House symbol (Start or open a project etc), and the Edit Tab.

If you were to click the Edit tab you would go into the Esssentials workspace a watered down (some would say crippled ) version of the Edit workspace with some of the extra features missing . Most experienced and long term users prefer the full or Complete Edit workspace. You can choose that by clicking the Complete workspace in that middle section. This will also give you the Manage Tab betwen the House symbol and Edit mode. You could also open an image from the Open button on the right.
You can see video tutorials on starting with PSP on the Corel site
https://learn.corel.com/tutorials/getti ... tshop-pro/
and a more complete list here:
https://learn.corel.com/photo-tutorials/

Ways of opening an image in your preferred Edit workspace

1. Click on the Manage Tab - it will open with a default series of images - a Navigation panel on the left , the Organiser along the bottom. In the Navigator panel you can choose the Computer button (avoid Collections to start with) and then go through the folders to the one you want and your images will show along the bottom. Once you have chosen an image you can then click the Edit tab and that image will be opened in Edit mode with all the tools and functions available to edit it.
To open a number of images you can use the Control key for separated images and the Shift key for a group of images (typical windows controls for operating with files in copying , moving etc.)
01ManageSelect.jpg
For more information on Manage mode
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IvBOMcLgY
Which also goes into Collections making the video a bit long and complex.

2. In Edit mode you can use Shift F9 to show the Organiser palette and again using the Folders icon -Show Hide Navigation go to the folder with your images.
Again double clicking on an image will open it in the workspace or you can just click and drag it into the workspace. You can also use Control and shift keys to select a number of image and drag them into the workspace.

3. Use File>Open and navigate to the image folder and select imags to open.

4. You can also use Windows explorer to navigate to the preferred images folder and minimise that . Then making sure the Edit work space is open click the minimised folder and Drag and drop any selected images into the work space. This is my preferred way as I like to leave the organiser open at an example set of test images rather than changing it each time and also keeping it hiidden so I have more workspace to operate in.

Wow, Thanks to All for the information that I wish I would have had before buying PSP2019, although it was a fair price. I was using PSE Elements 2019 because it makes organizer and editing fairly easy, although not the easiest. I did not realize that PSP 2019 is not a true organizer, but more of an editing program with extensive mods allowed to the photos being looked at. I will keep the program for use when I put some of my 6000 photos, which are on SD cards and a separate 1TB external HD, so they are safe, into PSP2013 .
Again, Thanks to All...
