Editing Adobe Illustrator in PSP X8

Post by rosede »

I use PaintShopt Pro X8 and I would like to edit Adobe Illustrator files can I do that with PSP?

I have an organization that is holding a bowling tournament. The person who normally does our flyers is busy and is having difficulties finding time to do them so I was thinking of buying a template and edit it so I can get this moving forward. The issue is that all of the flyers that I see are either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. I obviously don't have Adobe products, so I can't get anything that requires AP, but I think that I should be able to edit and use items that are Adobe Illustrator.

I would like to verify that I can use one of these templates before I purchase it.

Thanks

Daryl

Would be helpful to have a page link to one of the pages with flyers on it so we can see what you need. You may be able to create your flyer totally in PSP rather than go through a conversion.

No PSP cannot edit Adobe Illustrator files. If it's able to import them it'll convert them to a raster image.

As hartpaul said you might be able to recreate them in PSP.

However, you might look into Gravit Designer. https://gravit.io/

When you sign up for an account you're automatically placed into a trial for the Pro edition ($99/year subscription) but if you don't subscribe it'll downgrade itself to the "lite" version of the software after 14 days. During the trial, Gravit should be able to edit an Adobe Illustrator file. It's a "pro" feature.

Another free vector software that should be able to open AI files is Inkscape - https://inkscape.org/

From there Affinity Designer is only $50.

Of course, Corel's own Corel Draw should be able to do it, free Trial but expensive software.

IIRC Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics program. It should export svg files. You can download and install Inkscape for free. That will open any svg file. It will also allow you to export a png of any size. PSP can then edit the png file. I know this because for years I edited and created SVG files in Inkscape, then exported them, picked them up in PSP7 (even before PSPX7) and finished them off. (Some time before I jumped in, they started with Sodipodi.)
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

I stand corrected. I have Adobe Illustrator CS2 (it was available free for a time). I couldn't find an Export, but it does save as an AI file. Now Inkscape and Adobe Acrobat Reader will open this file as an infinitely-scalable image. More interestingly, PSPx8 will open it too -- but don't use the default 72 DPI. Go for something much higher. I went for 256 DPI as a test, but I noticed PSPx8 would go to 25,000+ DPI.

Edit: Found the Export... feature. It will let you export to a lot of raster formats, but not svg.

I'm not a creative person, so I can't create a flyer on my own. I tried to, but I just don't have the skills. I'm not even skilled enough to recreate a flyer that I've seen. Believe me, I've tried. In the past I've always used some kind of a template, most likely an MS Publisher or similar type of template. But I can't find a template for what I need in any other format than something in Adobe. Once a upon a time, I thought that I could do graphics, hence my using PaintShop Pro. and I have done some things, but I really struggle and don't really do much anymore.

Here is where I was looking at getting the template. https://creativemarket.com/search?q=bow ... IDs=2%2C42

I do have Inkscape on my Linux laptop. I've never used it, but I know that its loaded there. I guess I could give that a try. I can also install Gimp. Again, I've never used it, but perhaps that is an option?

I personally prefer to stick with PSP, because its what I know. I'm not excited about trying to figure out a new application. Are there any sites that have PSP templates, like what I've found for Adobe? I'm willing to purchase the template. I'm not looking for freebies.

Thanks

It is not really that difficult to make a flyer in PSP depending on the complexity you want.
You need familiarity with Layers, Text tool , Object Alignment, Changing colors in Materials palette, Pick Tool, Text Wrapping (Not absolutely necessary).
Asearch on Google for "Public Domain Free images ten pin bowling" will provide lots of images that you can use on a local flyer.
I located this one which came in two versions with black or white background:
01bowling.jpg
After placing that on a suitable size background (I did all this on an 8 x 10 format image - start large and then you can always resize down to a smaller size) it was then a matter of placing text on the image on different layers and arranging that.
The final simple product and teh layers used is shown below. Took aboot 10 minutes.

I don't have difficulties with the tools in PSP, I'm just not very creative. Creativity is something someone needs in order to make something from scratch. That's why I look for templates.

Thanks for the input.
