Audio

I have just downloaded DVD Workshop 2 trial so I can see if I want to buy it.

While testing this out, I have added a video file however, playback has no audio.

The original file does have audio although WS doesn't seem to acknowledge this. Does this mean I have to extract the audio first?

The file I am using was created in PInacle Studio as a DVD Compliant MPG

Is the audio AC3?

Typically, trial versions of Ulead software to do not allow usage of AC3.

In my opinion, this is a severe limitation of the trial version. More and more devices record AC3 natively. (DVD recorders and DVD camcorders for example.) Ulead might want to rethink this limitation since a lot of people can't actually trial it for what they want to eventually use it for. The 30 day trial period limitation should be good enough.

Dolby Lab requests an license fee for AC3 support so it cannot be given as an free feature, that's why you will not see Ulead or other video software companies to offer this AC3 support in the trial version or for free. If Dolby Lab does not request the license fee, then I think it's possible for Ulead and many other video software companies to offer it as a free feature.

Hope this helps.

I am thinking of purchasing DVDWS2. Does the software allow me to import movie clips with DTS 5.1 audio, or does this software not recognize DTS?

playback has no audio.
What "playback?" The DVD?

Go to Edit->Audio. Check "Convert to Disc Template". If this box is not checked, the audio won't be re-coded, and the DVD might have MPEG audio which is not standard. The DVD standard requires that all DVD players be LPCM and AC-3 compatable.

tmternes,
DVD Workshop does not have a DTS encoder or decoder. You might be able to copy a clip without de-multiplexing the MPEG file. You might be able to trim-it, but I'm pretty sure you can't do any real editing. In your case, don't check "Convert to Disc Template." Of course, you can copy an entire DVD including the DTS soundtrack, without any decoding/encoding. (Assuming no CSS problems.) :)

Surcode sells DTS encoder software for $500. (I think it used to be $2000.) I have no idea if this software integrates with DVD Workshop.

Apparently Dolby is has lowered the license fees for 5.1 AC-3, because you can get a 5.1 AC-3 add-on for Pinnacle Studio for $10.

As above DTS is not standard, so if your DVD has DTS, it should also have an LPCM or AC-3 track.

mpeg audio is currently one of the PAL standards.

@Pie0Pah
are you not hearing audio during the DWS Preview of your project, or after you burn to disc, and trying to play from a standalone dvd player?
