Do you run your VS as administrator?
Hi,
I have had quite interesting discussion with Corel's support about which credentials the VideoStudio should be running. My experience about the Windows world has teached me to run all daily operates as non-administrative credentials. That makes my life easier especially when other family members do not install all freeware from internet. Unfortunately we could not found the common thought about that, so I though to ask on here how others has faced this.
Basically when I install VS to my workstation I run the installation program using my admin account. But when I'm using it, I'm using the regular user.
How do you do it? If you have different account for installations and lower priviledges to daily operation, have you noticed any troubles?

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
Hi,
Two things are at work here, and they are NOT the same.
1st, Windows.
If you are the sole user of a PC - c'est moi - running as the admin user has some benefits. But it doesn't mean that all software will run with admin privileges. There's a rt-button click to get a context menu which allows a selected item of software to run with admin privileges. Without that, it's usually normal altho doing something in Explorer often gets a pop-up message about using admin privileges.
2. Software priority, in this case for Video Studio.
Windows assigns apps a priority in 3 levels for access to system resources. Usually apps open at a normal priority.
Even logged in as the admin user, starting VS opens it as a 'normal' priority in windows. See that in the task manager panel, processes tab and find the running application in the list. You can accelerate VS by raising the priority of the app to high or realtime - various levels of access to windows resources that other apps, even machine operations, which have a lower priority are shunted for - but in the realtime case, you have to actually start the app using admin privileges. That's a configurable item under windows 10, but under windows 7, you have to create a batch file that just sets the path to the drive/folder of app exe file, and opens the app with realtime set; and then run that batch file as administrator (select file, rt-click and from the list choose "run as administrator'). If you just double clicked the batch file, it opens at high priority.
On testing (short and longer files,) raising the windows priority to realtime can make VS complete a task 30% faster than normal for short files, and rather less than that (about 6-10%) on longer ones. I haven't found any other thing that could match this result.

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
I have created an account for my grandson and not seen any problems or differences when using video studio without admin rights
Whether auto updates will need approval I don’t know but think so as that’s installing / changing the program entering the admin password would overcome that.
AFAIK there should be no effect on performance choose which account we use

Hello David, how do you do this?
I tried opening up VS2018 as administrator but this seems to make no difference in using the programme or rendering even small files.

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
In windows 10, Ken Berry articulated how to do this using standard settings. See his discussion in this topic
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64649&p=364188&hili ... ty#p364188
That technique isn't available for windows 7, so this is the batch file I use It took myself and asik a few iterations to get it right, but what this file does is execute a series of command line directives:
- 1st line: change directory to the drive/folder path where the video studio executable is located
- 2nd line: start video studio with realtime mode set.
Edit the file so the drive and folder path are correct for your PC, and save it to that location. Rename the .txt file to be .bat. Then, rt-click the bat file and choose "run as administrator" at the top of the context menu that is displayed. Once the VS user interface is up and stable, use task manager to check the processes tab for vstudio.exe, and scroll across to check the priority it is running at. This is only good for the current session of VS. Close VS, and you have to start as admin using the batch file to do it again, otherwise it starts as 'normal'.
Make a shortcut of the batch file on the desktop if needed, but you still need to execute the shortcut as administrator.

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
To make it easier for Win 10 users, this is how to do it (copied from the thread which David kindly provided the link to):
Ken Berry wrote:For anyone wondering how you do this, go to Task Manager and make sure all tabs are visible by clicking 'More details' in the bottom left of the Task Manager Screen. Then go to the Details tab and find vstudio.exe Right click it and you should see in the dropdown menu 'Set priority'. Click that. It's set at Normal by default in the new menu which appears, but Real Time is at the very top of the list.

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
Thanks Davidk for your reply
My biggest problem is the GPU at the moment as that is pretty old
This workstation is running with shared account with other family members, so this is not working. But also it is still 10x more clear to run accounts with regular account and when higher priviledges are required it really ask an account instead of "press [Ok]". But this is of course up to how you have used to use it.Davidk wrote:1st, Windows.

I'm still so rookie with the VS, that the priorities are not the problem.Davidk wrote: 2. Software priority, in this case for Video Studio.

Here is one example:lata wrote:I have created an account for my grandson and not seen any problems or differences when using video studio without admin rights
1. Start VS with normal account
2. Put a video/image to main track
3. Assing effect: Vitascene 2.0 to it
4. Try customize filter.
5. At least I get the licence error, which I do not get if I run with my admin account.

Re: Do you run your VS as administrator?
Hi Pepi
Thanks for that , i have run my grandsons account using 2018 and do not get the licence issues you seem to be having, I cannot explain that.
The only time i have issues with some of the ProDad stuff is if i manually install the plugins one at a time, that could affect the activation normally provided with installing the entire package.
You could try running Video Studio with a normal account but choosing to Run the program as Administrator, If that changes things then it would appear to be an admin issue.
But as i say i do not have a problem.
