Split Screen forced to Overlay

Post by Pepi »

Hi,
This will be a real dummy question about VS2018 :)

When I'm creating a split screen, why it will be added to the Overlay tracks only? Yes, I can move the first track to main video track, but then I hit to interesting synchnorization issues: When I add something before the split screen section the main video moves forward, but others doesn't. But if I do have the split screen only on the overlays, the next video to be added on the main video track cannot be added after the split screen. That is forced to go to end of the latest video/photo on the main track.

There must be something simple, what I just don't understand.

That's the way split screen works, it puts everything in the overlay tracks so that it can overlay each other and only show the bits you want to show in the splits

if you want to continue your video in the top track then put something in it the same length as the split scene sequence , conveniently you can put a color block from the color library and set it to the same length as the split screen sequence. then you can add the rest of your videos to the top track, doesn't matter what color you use it does not show onscreen, or you can just use any image you have, again it will not show onscreen so doesn't matter what it is

DO NOT move clips in the split screen template to other tracks you will ruin the correct working of the template

This is also a small bug of the SW. When they decided to place the splitscreen to the overlay track they could put something to the main track just to inform the user what is going on.

The way how I use the splitscreen is simple.
1. unlock the overlay tracks
2. create the splitscreen segment.
3. put something in the same length to the main track (red color)
4. lock the overlay tracks ( to avoid shifts)
5. continue in normal editing ( you can change the red color to anything else or just place the next clip to the main track).

Thank you both of you. And Weaver, I fully agree, hard to understand why VS does not add the reservation on the main track automatically, as it could :)

I just put a dummy black png file on the video track for spatial cosideration.
