PSP 2019 64 bit not shutting down

Post by dj_taylor60 »

When I close PSP 2019 (64 bit), it stays in memory, and makes the PC slow, especially File Explorer.

Have found I need to use task manager and shut down the process, almost every time I use PSP 2019. Do not have the issue with PSP 2018 (62 bit).

I did a complete remove and reinstall, but problem remains.

This has been an ongoing issue with a number of programs. For example, Firefox used to linger. You had to wait to restart. I have the same problem with PSP. If I have PSP 2018 64-bit open and close it, I have to wait a few seconds to open PSP 2018 32-bit (there are extensions only available in 32-bit apps). You seem to have a problem with an indefinite shutdown time. Seems to me that only Corel is in a position to fix it.

Same problem here. But when PSP 2019 64 stays after "close by me" in the task list, then "forever" (with a GB of ram), have to kill it (windows when shutting down is waiting...).
Not always, not always reproducible (when using Plugin Perfectly Clear 3 almost always) - annoying...

One workaround to try: open Task Manager when you open PSP. Then when you close PSP tell Task Manager you want to close PSP. It takes a little time, but not as much as restarting your computer. Alternatively, you could log off and log back on without restarting Windows. I used to do that to fix my display drivers.

Yes, or a little batchfile - to get the pid from PSP64 with "tasklist" and kill PSP-process via PID with "taskkill" - but i don't want to do this, i hope Corel fixes this as part of an SP. Meanwhile i'm back to PSPx9...

The only problem with going back to PSPx9 is that as an old guy I got addicted to the larger icons that are now possible since PSP 2018.

It is perhaps related to the way PSP creates thumbnails and its database. When closed, it needs perhaps to close with security all internal process. Not sure but possible if you have many images in your folders.

Do you use manager mode? Do you have it accessing a folder with a large number of image files or a mixed folder with some pdf files present.
I know there was some problem with Manager cataloging large numbers of image thumbnails and keeping it present in task manager for some time .
I use the organiser and rarely use Manage mode. With a folder containing 92 images PSP2019 64 bit disappears from the Task Manager after 10 seconds and for the same time with the 32 bit version on a desktop computer.
Same timings with PSP X9 64 bit and PSP 2018 64 bit.

I can tell you from my own experience that closing PSP 2018 is delayed, even if you did not have Manage Mode active.

I don't know if this adds anything to the knowledge of those in this thread, but while I have the quite rare instances of various versions of PSP closing but still being present as running in Task Manager (which I can then immediately shut down in Task Manager), I don't have any issues with any versions of PSP's workspace and program not closing in Windows 8.1 when I either close it with the X at the right corner or use File>Exit.

As perhaps a further help, in my Manage window I do not use Collections at all and don't have any collections folders. I only use the Computer tab to browse my images. The one time - some time ago - that I tried to try out Collections it slowed my opening and closing of PSP quite noticeably, so just don't bother with it any more. I just name my Computer folders the same say I would if I were to be silly enough to go back to using Collections. :-)

JoeB

Working with a german version of PSP, so i don't know exactly what you mean, maybe: I have no collections/monitored directories, i use only the computer folders directly, only jpegs ( /pic/yyyy/mm/yyyymmdd_hhmmss-camerafilename.jpg ), i only use the "edit"-Workspace/Window.
Have tried that (collections) with PSPx9, but to slow (imho) after some time, so have it deactive long time ago.

The content of the folders is rarely more than 20-200 pictures (holiday times 600).
Thumbnails-creation is completed so far as i know/can see (can scroll through all pic without delay) before exit psp.

I watched the task after closing PSP2019-64 for almost 3 minutes, then I had no desire to wait ... it's not just a few seconds if it happens...
PSPx9-64 is gone in the task/process list after closing or is it after few seconds.
actually, all presets are the same...

but not every time reproducible, even if I do the same thing in 2 sessions one after the other.

Have no problems with other programs.

update:
have looked one time with the "process monitor" (perfmon.exe /res) -
PSP2019 has one process then, requires <=1GB of memory, have 0 seconds cpu time (does nothing), and no files are written in "data media (Datenträger-Rubrik)" from any PSP-process.
Will do if it happens again...

I have not noticed any slow down with the PC when I shutdown PSP2019, but when I go to re-open PSP2019 at least 50% of the time I have to first go into Taskmanager to end the previous instance of the process and then it works.
It also can take 5-10 seconds when in edit mode to swap from one tool to another and other stuff takes longer to do than with PSPX9. Very disappointed in Corel's promise of this being faster than previous versions.

I use the adjust mode a lot, and have lots of thumbnails across the bottom. That seems to be the main problem, in that if I go straight into edit, and shut it down it is OK.

I like the idea of a batch file to kill the process. Will try that.
