It's now acting like my old VS x7 version where I can drag a clip on the timeline to a new position and it shifts the other videos rather than overlaying the current videos and leaving a gap. It also is letting me drag a new clip between clips on the timeline, moving the clips after the inserted clips to the right rather than overlaying them. VS 2019 was almost unusable before. Now it seems to be working as I had hoped.
Gap editing is still available, Corel have fixed many of the problems that it created with SP2
test -- Add a few sample images to the top timeline, then select one in the middle, drag that to the right ( a little - not too far) all are moved right to create a gap

For me i dont understand how gaps improve the editing that older versions could not do?
If i want as space i simply add a colour clip

@lata, You are correct about being able to create a gap, but I think VS 2019's new behavior is far better after the update. If I move a clip to the right, it does create a gap with all following clips also moving to the right on the timeline. Previously VS 2019 would move only the one clip I selected, overlaying the clip to the right. VS 2019 prior to the update also didn't allow a user to insert a clip between clips. It would overlay the new clip on the clips already on the timeline. I found the old version incredibly frustrating. I think the update makes VS 2019 at least usable.

When Trevor was talking about earlier versions, he meant VS 2018, X10, X9 and other earlier versions which did not allow gaps in the main timeline. He wasn't talking about earlier "builds" (i.e. before SP2) of VS 2019 which is the very first version of VS to allow gaps in the main timeline.

I would be happy if they got rid of gaps completely like in the older versions. I'm just an amateur user, but I don't understand the point.

I think you would find a lot of us agreeing with you. While some suggest that it is to bring VS into line with other NLEs, the fact remains that we are long used to VS without gaps in the main timeline, and with ways of simulating gaps if they are ever needed. As Trevor suggested, one way is to use colour mattes. Another is not to use the main timeline but place everything in overlay tracks, which allow gaps...

Yet you can find posts on this forum from people complaining that VS didn't leave gaps when clips were deleted from the video track unlike other more "professional" NLEs do. There is no obvious advantage to adding this gap creating capability to VS, yet it was done - undoubtedly to get an additional point when VS is compared to its competitors in reviews of NLEs. Unfortunately Corel's main programming effort is to add new features to keep up with the other NLEs and little effort is expended to improve either stability or rendering performance. [/soapbox]

I reinstalled VS2019 today and found the timeline bugs and other issues are solved. Using the 2019 version is so much better than last year's version - there are a lot of "quality of life" updates. EG being able to store the color correction settings as a preset and applying them to video snippets with one click. So thanks a lot. ;-)
