Video Studio 2019: I hope the timeline gets fixed

Post by floyd_steinberg »

I bought VS 2019. So many great new functions (I mean, LUTs, color correction, split screen videos! cool!)
But WHY did Corel need to fix the timeline which wasn't broken in the first place? The way it works (read: doesn't work) at the moment makes no sense at all.
When I drop a video into the main track, between two existing video files, I expect the following videos to be moved to the end of the timeline (the way it worked in all previous releases) Instead, the videos now get layered with a transition effect… Are there any plans to fix this in an update? Otherwise I will claim a refund (sorry)

Also, why did they remove the "split video" option from the context menu? Splitting videos is a basic operation and having it in the context menu means YOU DON'T NEED TO MOVE YOUR ARM to do it, which is much more convenient than using the "scissors" icon.

Your next step is to file a complaint with corel.

;-) well, yeeeeah… i mean, no. I like Video Studio. In this price range, it a very good (maybe the best) product. I sometimes wonder if anyone at corel tried to make actual videos with the 2019 version, though. It's simply not possible with the current release. I just found out setting the playback speed is broken, too. Reinstalling 2018 now.

Corel are of course aware of the problems with the timelines.
It would be nice if they scrapped the gap editing, wishful thinking

The split clip was dropped by mistake afaik and should be reinstated

As for the speed options, please report that to Corel Support, not sure if that has been reported before
With all the other issues it's not surprising things get missed

WARNING: DO NOT SAVE ANY LARGE PROJECTS IN VIDEOSTUDIO 2019 UNTIL YOU FIRST READ THIS(Addressed towards the end of this Post). The down side of being an "early adopter". I bought VS2019 the day after it came out(bought on Valentines Day) and after fighting with my firewall and getting it to correctly install all of its downloadable content, VS2019 is unusable for me as well. In case there are those who "wait it out" until bugs are fixed, here is your warning. Here are the problems I've ran into so far before I had no choice but to Reinstall VS2018 just so I could continue working on a current project. 01) When the project is loaded in and I try to edit, the main video track(track 01), Track 01 does not "auto align" clips to the left as in past versions. It acts like lower tracks act and can have empty spaces between clips. 02) Any sequence of clips that have transitions between them are treated as if they are grouped together when you click the video clips(the group ending wherever the sequence reaches 2 clips with no transition between them before and after the fake group) . You can select and delete/add TRANSITIONS between the clips treated as a group but the video clips AND Transitions themselves are grouped together and you cannot insert video clips into that group that should not exist. I tried grouping/ungrouping the clips but it was neither recognized as a group to begin with and did not fix the problem by ungrouping. 03) Ripple Editing is broken and does not work even though you have ripple editing selected on one or more tracks. I've tried turning R.E. off and back on to see if that works too but nope, it's hosed. 04) I made the mistake of saving my project in VS2019 and now that I'm having to revert back to VS 2018 but use it until VS2019 is fixed, when I try to open the file saved by 2019 into VS 2018, it fails to load and caused VS2018 to do nothing(not load). I tried going into VS2019 and resaving it again in VS x10 format. When trying to load my x10 format save in VS2018, it causes the VS2018 to crash every time. Luckily, I save in iterations and can revert back to a past save with only a minor loss in productivity and will continue editing in VS2018 until VS2019 gets a Service Pack Update. I do not know if there is anything else wrong besides what I posted. This was enough time wasted for me to realize it's not usable...

I completely agree with the points you have raised. No idea why they would change something that isn't broken and loyal customers have become used to.

Timeline management is a complete nightmare now. The scissors icon is nowhere near as effective as the split video option. The gap feature is nauseating and irritating. Moving clips around on the timeline is a nightmare due to the auto transition applied. Please fix this. It is unusable as it is now. It essentially doubles the work load and time for a project.

In addition, I'm regularly receiving the error "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working" error (which I never received with previous versions) whenever trying to play the timeline or render a video.

The new features are great but the negative changes to the timeline and old processes completely offset it. Beyond me why you would release a product for sale in such a buggy state.

I installed 2019 alongside 2018 so I have both, knowing full-well there would be issues (Deja Vu). So I have the reliability and comfort of 2018, and can play with the new. What amazes me is that they have not yet released any patches. With 2018 they were very quick to address fundamental problems. Anyhow I went with the upgrade with open eyes...

I am sure Corel are aware of the problems raised here and yes there are more and all seem to be associated with the new Gap Editing
Tell Corel Support, the more users complain, probably wont speed up the fix but maybe next time they will learn and not release a version that is unusable.

with 2018 they released the program then immediately patch 1, a disaster, soon released patch 2 to fix patch 1.
Patch 3 took a while, then patch 4 in November as you say Deja Vu

I believe this must be somekind of re-use code error. If you try that on VS2018 it is working as you explained. But if you do the same on the OverLay track, there the behaviour is like you complained. So, perhaps the product group did some code optimation and started to use the same code from main track and overlay part. With known results.

Thanks. I have opened a ticket with corel support. I hope everyone else here does the same. Eventually numbers (pressure) will matter.

I received a generic reply. Completely useless. No effort to even acknowledge the issues that have been raised here. Pathetic.

I opened a ticket, as suggested, and got a personalized reply with an apology. They said the problems are known and they're working on a solution. (Won't copy it here 'cause the mail wasn't in english).

FYI, If you are not aware, VS 2018 has had update patches AFTER the last(and only) patch posted on their patch page. You have to get the update from within VS2018 itself. They stopped posting the patches for download after update 3. Not sure why they stopped. I always like downloading the patches for future reinstalls. Maybe Corel is cutting back on website admins to cut cost of operations. Anyway, I thought you'd like to know there's an update waiting for you if you go in the program and do it there... :)

I was gonna do the same(keep 2018 installed) but I had trouble while installing 2019 and tech support instructed me to uninstall 2018. It never helped and I was gonna have to wait until Monday for the next level tech to help me but I figured it out myself. I had to reinstall 2018 just so I could edit again until 2019 is fixed.
