Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
VHS video is of course analogue in its original state, and thus has no digital signals embedded in it which could form the basis for breaking it up during capture by the usual USB-type capture devices. The only types of capture device of which I am aware which could allow split by scene are the ones that connected via Firewire and which captured and converted the video into the digital DV/AVI format. Some of those devices allowed conversion from DV to mpeg-2 on the fly, but when that option was chosen, split by scene did not work. As far as I am aware, VS can still split incoming DV/AVI signals by scene. But freeware programs like WinDV for standard definition DV, and HDVSplit for HDV format, will also do it.
I seem to recall that there used to be tweaked versions of Pinnacle which came with some of the Firewire capture devices, so I am wondering if you used to have -- or still have -- a Firewire capture device, and you got your Pinnacle 14 that way. But if it is a standard USB capture device, I don't think you will be able to split your VHS by scene in any version of Video Studio.
However, I will be very interested in anyone else can make a suggestion as to how you can do it.

I can split by scenes in my VS2018 my old Xvid AVI made from Hi8 . but it's not the original capture which was mpg. this avi was made with VSx4 I think.

Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
I agree with Ken, the capture source has to be digital containing a timecode to use Split Scene.
once you have captured the analogue, I assume to Mpeg2 then you should be able to use Split Scene from the library or timelines as asiks reply, here it will create virtual clips in the same way as using the scissors.

Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
Hello, Thanks all for your kind help
I will try to answer to your différent questions in order you could find where is my problem…..
First just before the death of my Pinnacle studio 10 software, I captured my old cassettes by scenes from two sources : Secam VHS by Philips VR550 video player and Hi8 by Handycam Sony.
I transfer to VSU 2018 by Pinnacle 500PCI card connected by
-only two cinch connectors (yellow for video and white for sound ) for Handycam Sony
-I add an adapter S / VHS - Scart - 3 RCA to the previous for Philips player
Never with a firewire
Like I keep several videos with a long time recording, for me, splitting scenes when the record is changing a lot is very usefull because of quick sort. I earn time ! It's the reason why I would like to find again this possibility.
In my « old Pinnacle software» you’re right the file was .avi type and gave me five files : XXX.avi - XXX.avi.A.index - XXX.avi.index - XXX.avi.scn.xml - XXX.scn, but now the file with VSU 2018 is .mpg type.
Unfortuantely, I didn’t find where I could change .mpg to .avi output, however is it always possible in VSU 2018 ?
On the same way, in order to answer Asik 1, I don’t understand « this avi was made with VSx4 I think………… and how sensitive you set it ? “
I've tried to be as clear as possible and I hope you will help me to solve my problem.
Best regards.

Jean, right click on your file in the VS library and there you find split scenes as I showed

Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
Hi Jean
When we capture / transfer the video to the pc the Split Scene option will only work if the source files are digital.
MiniDv and Hi8 camcorders were digital recorded to digital allowing to use Split by Scene, the Format would allow for DV or Mpeg2
Where the input device is analogue then Split by Scene does not work , Format choice would be Mpeg2 only.
Where Split By Scene is not available then capture to Mpeg2
As Asik says we can Split by Scene from the library or timelines after capture.
Right click any clip and choose Split by Scene – Scan method = Frame Content
This will cut the clip in a similar manner as using the scissors to create separate clips.

Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
Hello,
I'm very happy …...I've made the splitting with an import Hi8 file. Like you've told me, it works !
I'll try to do the same thing with an import secam file in order to confirm entirely the proposal.
I've seen in "Options" "scene detection sensitivity" the default setting is 70.
Is it a good setting or not ?
At last, after splitting scenes, can I save the result or do I have to make that again each time ?
Congratulations to all, I'm lucky to have you in front of me, really you're very helpful !
Best regards

Re: No possibilities to split scenes when I capture VHS
As already mentioned the scene splitting function is different in digital world and in the analog. In the digital stream there are automatically meta data which indicates the beginning and the end of the take.
In analog video this is missing, ie the scene splitter works based on video content. That means the splitter will detect the video changes. This is set by sensitivity. I do not know exactly what the 70 means, probably changes in video (70%) ie if there is a change 70% or bigger it will detect this point as scene change by 70%.
If you did it once and save the result, you do not need to repeat this later.
