Transparent Background
I would like to know what is the BEST way to remove the background on an existing image? I need the background to be transparent. I'm currently using the "Background Eraser." Although it does work, (not so well on white helmets however) I'm thinking there's got to be a better way to do it. I've never worked with masks much. I believe that might be an option, but I just need to know from someone that really knows this software. I'm using the 64 bit version of PSP 2018 on a powerful laptop running Windows 10. I'm including examples of what I'm needing.....one with a white background and one with the background removed with the background eraser.

Re: Transparent Background
Do they all have solid white backgrounds? Or solid backgrounds of any color really?

Re: Transparent Background
I too would like to discover a way to remove the background of an image other than the background eraser feature as at times it also erases the image I'm trying to save. Any suggestions?

Re: Transparent Background
Just a word on this. I've been working diligently on my project and was able to discover the best way to remove the background from these helmet images. Create a new background larger than your image. While you're at it, create a new transparent background the same size. Copy and paste your image onto the black background. Use your "Magic Wand" tool to remove the background. Your tool should have these parameters set: Mode: Replace Match Mode: RGB Value Tolerance: (You'll need to adjust this accordingly) Make sure "Continguous" is checked, Feather is 0 (can be adjusted as well) Anti-alias is checked and select "Outside"! After you remove the background, copy and paste it onto the transparent background and save it in a format that allows the transparency to remain intact. I suggest .png....Hope this helps someone!

Re: Transparent Background
Dahayes 62,
IMHO, I'm not sure is is the "best way". I see unnecessary steps...
My suggestion :
- Promote Background layer (right-click on the background layer in the Layers Palette)
- Image / Add Borders / Color : white / Symetric / Size in pixels (your choice)
- Magic Wand, with your settings, to remove the white color surrounding the helmet
- In the Layers palette, drag the layer to the empty workspace. This will crop the image to the non transparent area. This last step may me replaced by the following :
- Selection : invert
- Image / Crop to selection

Re: Transparent Background
I think you might have left out a step or two. While these instructions remove the white from around the helmet they leave the white that's within the helmet's green face guards. To also make sure that this white stuff is removed you have to have your Magic Wand set to Add Mode and then, after first clicking on the white that surrounds the image to select that, you have to click on all of the white areas within the guard rails to select those white areas also. Then to Selections>Invert the Crop to Selection. That will remove all of the white that doesn't belong on the helmet.Jean-Luc wrote:Dahayes 62,

Also, you should do the Add Borders prior to promoting the background layer to a regular raster layer. That's because if you promote first and then add borders the promoted layer will suddenly become a Background layer again and you'll have to promote it again. At least that's what happens in my PSP 2019.

Re: Transparent Background
Hi JoeB,
your are right about the borders and background layer. We can swith my two lines.
I tried to understand why Dahayes62 added extra space around the helmet. As he said Magic Wand WITH Contiguous checked, he wanted to click only once to remove only the surrounding white. He didn't say he clicked inside the helmet's guard rails. My suggestion removes the white OUTSIDE the helmet only.

Re: Transparent Background
I guess I should've made it clear that I had to remove ALL the white, including inside the face mask. I probably did use an extra step or two to accomplish what I needed, but I did it the only way I knew how. After submitting the question about it on this forum, no one could tell me how to do it, so I had figure out a way on my on.

Re: Transparent Background
Are you creating the helmets drawing yourself or do you receive them (or found them elsewhere) ?dahayes62 wrote:I guess I should've made it clear that I had to remove ALL the white, including inside the face mask. If you create them yourself, you may transform the value of the white color visible on some parts inside the helmet's image. If you create a RGB 245 white (not pure white), it may be easier to remove the pure white (RGB 255) from the image without affecting the "not pure" white.
See here :
With the Color Replacer Tool, I have replaced the RGB255 white found in the image (only on the helmet) with RGB246.
With the
Selections / Modify / Select color range (see settings attached),
I select the pure white (RGB255) and the job is done...
