BRUSHES - AAARRRRGGGG

Post by Loopy »

Hi Everyone
Hoping someone can help with this issue. Seems I am the only one who has this issue as I can't find much on it.
I had all my brush folders and sub-folders in a folder in Documents which I pointed PSP Brushes to that location but they did not show up in PSP. I then moved them from that folder into documents/Corel PaintShop Pro/2019/Brushes and pointed PSP to that loction but they still don't show up.
All brushes have the 2 required files, .pspscript and .pspbrush. I just cannot get them to show up in the program. What am I doing wrong? I have so many brushes and would like to be able to use them.
I seem to remember having this problem with the last version I had but can't remember the fix.
I am running Windows 10 home version and PSP 2019 Ultimate 32bit version.

Thanks for any help. I'm sitting inside watching a lovely blizzard outside. Have a nice day.

The folder option settings in PSP are correct? ("active" and "using sub-folders" klicked?)

Yes all is ticked. I did notice that in File Format Associations that I check all the boxes but when I go back to that setting half of them are unchecked again - one of them being the PSP associations. I've attached a couple of captures. Capture 1A shows them all ticked and Capture 1 shows how it looks when I go back in. It doesn't hold the checkmarks I put in and anything PSP becomes unchecked. Would this be the issue and if so how would I fix that?

Those are for Windows. Whether or not Windows has associated those file formats with PSP. Has nothing to do with PSP finding them and reading them in.

File Format Associations has to do with the types of files that are associated with PSP. It has nothing to do with brushes.

This is what Juergen was referring to. This box is accessed via File -> Preferences -> File Locations.

I am sorry I must be missing something. Your question at the start asks about Brushes and how to show and see those in PSP.
Then your second post shows PSP File associations which really has nothing to do with your first question.
I don't have any files ticked in the associations and all works as I want it to.
I have many brushes (over 230) showing when I choose the Paint Brush tool and click the drop down arrow beside the currentlt selected brush. Spme came with the original program some with installation of Creative Collection / Content and some as imports and exports of Photoshop brushes available on the net.
You might be better to show the paths leading to where you have the brushes installed . Do you see any brushes at all? How many ? Screenshot?

Yes if you notice my reply to Juegen said 'all is ticked, - meaning that I was answering his question. Then a new sentence was me just wondering if the file associations would have anything to do with my issues.

I'm sorry you were confused but I'm also confused and trying to find a reason why brushes will not show up in PSP 2019 Ultimate. I was just wondering if the file associations had anything to do with that, that's all. It was the same subject but just me trying to figure something out.

My file locations are right. I have tried them from my own PSP files and they won't show. I've put them all into the documents/Corel PaintSHop Pro/2019/Brushes and they still don't show up. They all have the .pspbrush and .pspscript.

I see about 4 folders and one is corel brushes and the other 3 are in my brushes folder but the type of files inside those folders are exactly the same in all the other brush folders. They all contain pspbrush and pspscript files. I hope you can understand this. It sounds ok to me but maybe not to you. :) Sorry. if you need clarification let me know.

Thank you

Thank you. I have been trying to fix this problem since I purchased the program in Nov. 2018. I've wasted hours and days of my time with no fix. I didn't realize they were in regards to windows. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

I honestly haven't a clue why PSP isn't seeing them. The only reason I can think is if PSP is literally unable to see those files for some reason or if the files are corrupted in some unknown way.

Here are a few things to try: (Please keep in mind, I'm in the dark here so these are most likely not going to help)
1) Try resettng all caches
Go to File -> preferences -> reset preference
Choose "Delete All Cache files" and deselect all other checkboxs and hit OK
Restart PSP.

2) Try opening one of the PSPBrush files inside PSP directly. Does PSP complain?

3) Remove the brushes from the default folder, and remove any brush folder locations you've added.
Next import one of your brushes by going to File -> import -> Custom Brush
Does the brush import? And does it remain after restarting PSP?

If you can open the PSP Brush you should be able to import them. I admit that you shouldn't have to import them at all. They should just appear. Short of using Process Monitor to watch how PSP looks for files and seeing if any errors are produced I really can't say why it's failing to read them in and create the caches.

Thank you I will certainly give this a try. I am going to be away all day tomorrow and Friday so will get at this when I get home.
Thank you again for your help. They did all work previously in PSP 2018

a "quick try" idea:

If you have PSP 2018 installed too and all brushes are there/shown/usable?

close PSP 2018 and enter PSP 2019

-> note your file preferences for brushes in PSP 2019 and then delete every preference for brushes in PSP 2019 (or untick "Enable")
-> add the same preferences like in PSP 2018
result?
depending on the result, you can then test step by step where the error strikes, then PSP 2019 itself would be outside first i think.

I store all my own psp ressources at my Data/install SSD, three main-directories (one for 32/64 bit independent ressorces, one for 32bit and one for 64bit) with subdirectories (for any needed ressource-type).
After installing a new version i have only to add the file-preferences to psp - they use the same directories.
New plugins, scripts, brushes i store only in my own directories.
A few preferences i have to add (Google NIK etc. resides in Programs...).

no idea if that's so smart, but so far everything works (PSP9, PSPx9, PSP 2019 currently) (it seems to me i like "9"...)

Regards, Jürgen
