Hello, i am trying to create a gradient colour on text but seem to have difficulties doing it. I want to try to create a back to the future logo effect on text. How can i do it please?

Are you trying to create a similar gradient to the above picture? If so, the Red-Orange gradient is very similar to the one used in the above logo. Just choose this gradient as your BG material before typing your text (use vector as the type). Sample below using gradient as BG and slight shear and drop shadow.
