Post by Ken Veal »

I have a problem trying to burn a standard DVD in Windows 10 the like of which I never had with windows 7.After I select burn, a message appears that the target drive may have some problems ,try again or reboot.Tried again and restarted and still get the same message on both of my disc drives which are the same ones as I had before "upgrading" to windows 10 home.Help please

Can you burn outside of VS2018?
Have you tried to create an iso image file and burn that?

I have not yet tried what has been suggested but if it means anything I have used the same drive for the same project when importing tracks from CDs.I also forgot to mention that there was a reference number of 517.0.0 with the message.

Hi Ken
There is some confusion regarding Windows Media Player
As far as i know that program can only burn a Data Disc, whether that be a CD or DVD, this would be used to backup or to transfer your files.

It does not burn a Video DVD that would play on your DVD player attached to the TV.

The burning process used by Video Studio has been the same for previous versions, it has not changed for a long time.

If another program is controlling the CD/DVD drive then that may be affecting Video Studio access to the drive.

Does the DVD you burned via Windows Media Player have a folder on it called Video_TS? If no then you have a data DVD and not a video DVD.

What are the names of the files on your burned DVD?

There are 2 files on the DVD, 1 video folder whose properties are Video, size 390 MB , contains 1 file no folders, attributes- read only(Only applies to files in folder)type –file folder.
1 WPL file 1KB.
Did not see a reference to TS anywhere in the properties of the DVD.

I would say you have data DVD not a video DVD. You still did not list the full names of the files on the DVD. Properties are not important at the moment and you won't see any reference to the Video_TS folder in the properties.
A WPL file is a simple playlist of the media files on the DVD and can only be used with Windows Media Player. Nothing else will recognize it.
It seems that Windows Media PLayer has "hijacked" your DVD burner and will not allow other burning programs to use it.
A proper video DVD will contain aVideo_TS folder which in turn will have a number of files with the extensions: ifo, bup and vob. Just look at a commercial DVD and you will see the DVD structure.

Windows Media Player cannot create a video DVD although it can copy video files to a DVD but they are simply data files. Some DVD players can play some video files but that does not make the DVD a standard video DVD playable on all stand-alone DVD players.

The DVD I burned via disc image does have a file named Video _TS on its properties. So what is the situation now, does this mean I will always have to burn via disc image when using VS, and if W.M.P. only burns data DVDs but they only play through my TV from my hi fi DVD player then that is a limitation I will have to suffer if W.M.P. was the only option I suppose.
The info I posted re the files was all that was available via properties, I know of no other way to get file info from a DVD.

How did you create the iso image file? Using the VS 2018 Share module? This is actually the method I always use. I never burn a video DVD directly since with the iso file you can always play it first on your computer with VLC and see if the project is correct.
I am not interested about any video properties. I wanted to know what files are contained the Video_TS folder on the DVD and you use Windows Explorer to see those not Properties.

Ken
If wmp has taken control of the CD/DVD-Rom drive which it seems feasible go to the Control Panel – AutoPlay and Reset All Defaults, option at the bottom.

Don’t know if this is the right place, there may be other auto play options to reset
Worth a try.

Googling---There were some problems when upgrading to windows 10 that could affect the CD/DVD drive that may involve re-installing the drivers, i would also try that via device manager.
