In a Cross Fade, the previous clip fades out completely and the following clip then fades in. How do you set up a fade where the end and beginning of the two clips OVERLAP for a second or two before the second clip shows completely? As you view the last couple seconds of the first clip, it begins to fade and, at the same time, the beginning of the second clip begins to fade into view. You see parts of both clips at once. Hard to explain, especially since I don't know the technical word for it.
Would this involve some sort of clip overlap on the Timeline?
Thanks!

Use the F/X crossfade transition. Insert it between two clips. This will create an overlap of the two clips and give you exactly the effect your want. If you double-click the inserted transition (on the timeline) a window opens where you can make adjustments to the transition

Re: A different kind of Cross Fade
Simply overlaying one clip over the end (or beginning) of another clip will give you the sort of crossfade you are after, and you can alter the length of the crossfade by increasing or decreasing the overlap area.
But like canuck, I usually use the Crossfade F/X transition which comes as part of VS, which has always given me exactly the effect you describe in any case. In fact I use it as my fixed automatically inserted transition in Preferences, and rarely use any other transition.

Expanding a bit on Ken's post: simply overlapping clips will give a random transition unless you have specified a default transition in preferences

Re: A different kind of Cross Fade
I wonder about that, canuck. Yes, I normally have Crossfade chosen as an automatic insertion in nearly all of my projects. However, I have now unticked the automatic insertion box in Preferences > Edit. Yet when I overlap two clips I always get a crossfade as the transition. I have just done this again in VS 2019 with the same results. I did it as one project. Then started a New Project, and inserted and overlapped new clips. But again I got the crossfade. Just to be sure, I restarted VS, but again got the same thing. That's fine by me since it would have been what I expected from a simple overlap i.e. showing the end of one clip fade into the beginning of the next clip.
But I would be interested if anyone else gets what canuck does i.e. a different type of transition and not a crossfade.

Re: A different kind of Cross Fade
I just did a few more tests using VS2018 and each time I got a different transition when overlapping clips. Random insertion set in preferences
Same behaviour in VS2019

Re: A different kind of Cross Fade
Check Preferences F7 – Edit – Default Transition Effect is used irrespective of Automatically add Transition setting
I suspect canuck is set to Random and Ken set to Crossfade
