using 2018 split screen
A Split screen introduction looks attractive for a new project I am doing. I've viewed the corel tutorial, read the user guide, and experimenting just with the video clips in the library
- been able to insert a split screen template to TL - IP-04
- been able to insert 1st clip and re-size to screen part 1 OK
and from there it is all downhill. Inserting 2nd or 3rd clip won't work as advertised, I can easily jam the template, or even crash VS, but haven't been able to get even 3-way split to work as the tut suggests.
Does anyone have even some successful experience with using split screens? If so, what is missing from the tut and user guide to get it to work?
Vs version is 21.4.0.165 64bit ultimate

Don't know what's advertised but you can right-click on each of the three PlaceHolder.png clips and replace them with a target video or photo.Davidk wrote:Inserting 2nd or 3rd clip won't work as advertised

Re: using 2018 split screen
what was advertised is drag and drop a clip from the library, press cntrl key to have it replace the placeholder. Worked Ok for 1st clip, resize also worked, but for 2nd and 3rd clips, drag and drop OK, cntrl OK (?) but re-size does not work for any other clips, nor does it retain the setting for clip 1,
I've viewed the tut and read the guide several times and what is there doesn't seem to work for the extra clips in the splits, hence my assumption there must be something 'unsaid'.

Re: using 2018 split screen
Doing it as tletter suggested certainly works; rt click each of the placeholders in the split screen template, choose replace file, choice of video or picture, navigate to it and OK. May have to size to suit - meaning use the sizing handles to re-position the image/reduce the whole screen image to fit within the split section without any black areas. Choice of pictures also allows filters eg P&Z as well.
Nothing in the tutorial or guide that even approaches this simple method.
Thanks

Re: using 2018 split screen
The Instant Projects library does contain a category called Split Screen
These are Instant Project Templates and work in the same manor as other Instant Projects
The Placeholder is of a set duration, most at 10 seconds
Replacing the Placeholders is best done using images as they will fit to any length (Ctrl+ Drop is the quickest way)
If we use Video then the video file has to have a longer duration than the target placeholder.
Problems will occur using the sample video under 10 seconds duration
If you open the Split Screen Editor you can create your own effects, add video here (drag and drop to screen or thumbnails) will set the correct duration's. Take care with the video length keeping it at a reasonable short length, as a test try with the Video Media samples, they are short and will add here reducing the place holder length to match video.
When you leave the Split Screen editor choose OK, -- will open on the timeline.
Saves a true Split Screen Template with a thumbnail in the media library, double click that to open the Split Screen Editor to continue editing the template
In addition the actual SSTemplates are here:-
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2018\EditingStyle\Style\Split Screen\PAL
Import those to a new Media Library folder, double click any template to open the Split Screen Editor.
As for the Instant Projects Split Screen templates they just cause confusion.

Re: using 2018 split screen
Trevor,
What I was trying to do was get a split screen vsp to work the way the tutorial did. However, the mechanisms the tut discussed for getting the clips onto the placeholders were collectively unsuccessful: the first was Ok, and the others just didn't work. What really worked was the method tletter outlined. And if you tried to insert a smaller clip over any placeholder - the vsp would not allow it, and conversely a longer clip was truncated to match the placeholder.

Re: using 2018 split screen
As has been said many times Lata , you can change the duration of any of the placeholders in the Split Screen templates, it is NOT of "set duration" watch Gewb's video and you will see how easy it is to do, that is unlike any of the other Instant projects where changing a duration there usually upsets the whole timing of the sequence
When I open the split screen creator it is just that , a creator , there is no option to use existing templates, no way of importing a ready made one to modify you have to create a new one of your own each time
How do you get a split screen template from the timeline with clips in it into the editor to change things, the tool tip on the split screen icon in the timeline tool bar says "Split Screen Template Creator" not editor

Re: using 2018 split screen
Apologies re the Creator / Editor words
I am not disagreeing with your methods of doing things, just that the Split Screen Creator is more versatile than using Instant Projects templates.
When you open the Split Screen Creator it clearly shows top right as Template Editor, that’s probably where I get confused.
Open the Split Screen Creator
Draw a few lines to create a Split Screen Effect
Drag images or video to the Screen segments or timeline thumbnails.
Choose Ok returns to the edit timelines with split Screens showing, where video has been used they are at the correct length.
A split Screen Template is placed in the Media Library, not IP library
If you wish you now have the choice to double click that to return/open the Split Screen Creator to edit your creation. You cannot do that using IP templates.

Re: using 2018 split screen
BJC,
That's the one. It comes across as simple, but trying to replicate the actions with the software open in front of me was the problem. And there's nothing in it about the method tletter outlined, which is even simpler and works.

Re: using 2018 split screen
I followed that tutorial and created a simple project without problems. Doing an advanced project will of course require a lot of experimenting (and patience).
