VS2018 experiences

Post by weaver »

I just upgraded to VS2018 (I am Ulead/Corel user since over 14 years, the last version was X7.

1.The VS2018 has much more nice video and effects
2.Looks quite stable, but Corel did not spent eny energy to inform the user when the editir is busy ( it was already the problem with X7, my feeling is that the VS2018 is even slower. The user very often does not know why the editor is not responding.
3.The new customisation window (for effects etc. ) is a bit confusing. It opens a big window and the user needs to close it manually. Sometimes the new window hides the important portion of the screen.
4. I am missing the project name and format from the GUI ( is it zhere somewhere?). It is quite important to know on which project I am working. ( on the VS X7 it was i. The upper right corner). Especially in case when I create alternative versions of the same video ( language, or format HD/SD etc. The versions have usually almost a same content just the format ir name is different. (VideoDE, videoEN, VideoSt etc).

To be continued.... :-)

Your project name and resolution size is listed directly under the window control icon in the far upper right of the application window (under Minimize, Resize and Close window icons).

The whole idea of the FX customisation window is that you can see what changes you are making in real time, any changes you make should be shown instantly in the right hand window, why do you want to see the normal interface as well. If you really really want to see the interface then just move the effects window a bit, click near the top edge and while holding select move it around

Of course you need to close it manually, how is Videostudio supposed to know if you have finished customising the effect, you may want to make more changes, when you are happy with the effect you simply click on OK at the bottom and the window closes, is that not normal for most programmes

and do you not have a disc activity light on your PC, if VS is still doing something that should be permanently on

Sorry for the missunderstanding, I did not mean the picture customisation, that is OK, just when you want to select something with where the big black window opens with the option. Where you can select what do you want to use. This window was on X7 much smaller and did not cover half of the monitor screen.
( some printscreens will follow).

Last image - no title name

That is not right
The project name and frame size should show there

You could try resetting the program by remaining the 21.0 folder, although I am not sure if that will update the UI
You may need to reinstall the program

I do not recall anyone else reporting this

Unfortunately only a truncated project name is displayed (see image). This makes it impossible to know which VSP is open if you need to use descriptive file names with more more 20 characters.

Thanks To Corel support we fixed the problem. Actually we do not know what was the reason. i had to change the language to English to find the latest Update. ( the VS2018 was installed yesterday so it should be the newest. The German GUI did not find any update.
After the upgrade the name and the size appeared in the upper right corner as expected.

i just want to congratulate to Corel support!

I have learned it in the past, therefore I use short names. ( they are also easier to search in my many TB archive.... :-) )

I gave up 8.3 names when Windows 95 came along in 1995 as long filenames are much more helpful, but to each their own, however, the program should support a user's choice.

The filenames are usually part of some kind of database, therefore their length will be always somehow limited. ( it must fit always into a given structure).
( I had this problem in my last job for almost 15 years, the customers wanted always more. At the beginning we had 8 characters, later 20, than 32 (it was also not enough, additionally everybody wanted his local characters). It was time for my retirement....

I discovered also certain instabilities with VS2018 ( unknown from the VS X7).
I am trying to organize my video archive ( over 100 MiniDV tapes). When I connect my cameras to the computer, the Windows recognizes the camera immediately while the VS2018 not. In worst case I need to restart the computer, in easier cases enough to restart the camera, soemtimes the camera is recognized immediately.
After scnanning and capturing the clips from the tapes, sometimes VS2018 crashes ( after the last clip) sometimes not. Furtunately the restart of VS2018 solves the problem. Interestingly the last clip is correctly recorded to the HDD, VS just cannot close the scanner and generates an error message to close.
2-3 times happened also that VS scanner started the camera, but the clips were not recorded to the harddisk. I had to restart the PC to fix the issue. ( the VS 2018 did not reported any problem, everything was working, just the record to the selected space was not happening).
Additionally I found also instability in the title menu. I had to edit my film in SD 4:3 format. When I clicked to the centerizing icon, the title dissapeared completely from the screen, and the VS2018 crashed, so far, that I could not close it at all. ( not even with the task manager. I repeated the step 2 times, with the same result. The manual positioning works.
I checked this - it is the problem of the SD 4:3 format. In HD the positioning works fine.
