Yes I saw them thanks. I just tested a different template from the editor with 4 images and it worked. I did the one with 3 and went back to the same overlapping.
I am totally new to this program, but things shouldn't be so difficult I appreciate your help
It does appear that you are having problems with the CTRL key
If you Drag the image over the placeholder press Ctrl then Drop the mouse and that does not work try this
Right click the black placeholder choose Replace Clip-Image , browse for an image
That should replace the black place holder
We can also use Shift + click to select more than one clip, then right click for replace a number of Clips

There could be some confusion in the wording of the Split Screen templates
The ones in the library are in fact Instant Projects
The ones created by the Split Screen Editor (closing by OK) will create a true Split Screen Template
Both look identical and both use then same method to replace clips.
The Split Screen Template is placed in the Media Library and when double click will open the Editor again.

All I know is by this tutorials, Using a split template: https://youtu.be/ConVw0cQXr8?t=32
The one with 4 spaces works, so I guess I will have to be happy with it. The one with 3 splits still brings weird unwanted effects and overlaps.
Thanks for all your time you guys! appreciate it.
I have mentioned there being a difference between Split Screen Templates and the Instant Projects Templates
If we use SST then they will open the Editor allowing us to customise / change the layout and add clips.
Create a new folder in the Media Library
Using Windows Explorer find these files, you should use Pal or Ntsc depending on your system
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2019\EditingStyle\Style\Split Screen\PAL
Or
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2019\EditingStyle\Style\Split Screen\NTSC
There are 9 templates – SplitScreen01.montage
Drag the 9 files to the Media Library folder
Yep they look the same
Now double click one of those to open the editor.
Add your images / clips then press OK will return to the edit tabs, create a new template and populate the timelines.
Trying to Edit
If you drag and drop a clip and get a transition, make sure you are dragging an image and not a video clip.
Using the SS Editor we can use Video clips and they will fit, take care with the length of video clips.
