I am experiencing a problem with Smart Proxy in that it doesn’t create a proxy file if the source file is an “AVI” file, but works fine if the source is a “MOV” file.
I import the “AVI” video clips into the library, right click on the file(s) I want proxies for, and select “Create Smart Proxy File”. The dialog box opens and the file(s) I selected are listed and selected. I select “OK”.
I then go to Settings -> Smart Proxy Manager -> Smart Proxy Queue Manager, the box opens but there are no files in the queue. The “Enable Smart Proxy” box is selected. When I go to Settings -> Smart Proxy Manager -> Smart Proxy File Manager the “AVI” files and their proxies are not in the list.
If I convert the “AVI” files to “MOV” then repeat the process, the “MOV” versions of the files do show up in the Smart Proxy Queue, and ultimately in the Smart Proxy File list.
If I take a “MOV” file (shot with a Canon DSLR) that previously worked with Smart Proxy, convert it to “AVI”, and repeat the process, Smart Proxy fails to create a proxy file.
The “AVI” files come from a Garmin DashCam 20, though this should not be important as a file converted to “AVI” failed as well.
I am running VideoStudio 2018 Version 21.4.0.165. This problem existed before I installed service pack-4. The hardware / software platform is as listed in my profile over on the side.
Is this a known problem? Could it be related to my particular hardware/software setup? Is there something somewhere in my VS-2018 configuration that I need to correct?
Thanks in advance.

Re: VS2018 Smart Proxy Problem With AVI Format Files
I have been working with Corel Support since my original post, and after several days of jumping through hoops for them (including the the usual request for winaudit and msinfo32 files, and the remove/re-download/reinstall request), and several days of silence, they have come back (after I requested an update) with their official reply ...
" We have checked with our higher level support team. There is no update for this as of now. For AVI files, smart proxy cannot be created."
Obviously, this isn't the answer I was hoping for.

Re: VS2018 Smart Proxy Problem With AVI Format Files
Hi
Apologies for the lack of response here, I missed your first post
AVI is just a container holding the video codec which could be many types
Long time ago I used DV-Avi which was recorded using a mini-DV camcorder
Being Standard Definition and easy to edit did not require smart proxy.
I assume your AVI is different possibly HD given that you seem to need Smart Proxy
I did test with one of my files, although had to reduce the Smart Proxy frame size, I do not have HD avi’s
First attempt failed, no errors, just no proxy files.
Changing the options from Auto Generate ---- Recommended, I selected another template one of the DVD options, This time it did create the proxy file
We can also create our own template, for some MP4 may be suitable.
I then tried 6 files, proxy files were created for all avi’s, having a few to go at i was able to view the proxy queue manager and see he files being created.
by the way what are the properties of your AVI's.

Re: VS2018 Smart Proxy Problem With AVI Format Files
Thanks for the reply.
Yes the video is HD 1920x1080p
The video play back in the preview window is not very smooth, and it can be frustrating when trying to check the timing of the music track as the audio plays smoothly but the video does not.
Editing the video brings additional challenges. Quite often If I edit the video clip in the preview window either while it is in the library before I insert it into the timeline or in the timeline after I insert it, the preview window goes black (no image) when I play the edited clip. The video does "play" in that the time value does advance, and when I pause the video the image displayed is from later in the video. If I insert the video into the timeline and use the multi-trim editor for all of the editing, the only playback issue I have is the jerky, jumpy playback.
I considered converting the AVI files to something else (MOV, MP4, etc.) but the image quality leaves something to be desired as it is and I didn't want to introduce another conversion into the workflow. These images were shot with an inexpensive camera with a 120 deg field of view, through a sometimes dirty windshield that is slightly tinted, curved side to side, and angled away top to bottom, complete with glare and reflections.
I'll play around with the different templates and see if I can find one that works with my AVI files.
